Did You know

Did you know that?..

El Paso and Ciudad Juárez in Mexico sit across the Rio Grande from each other and looking at them on a map, almost appear to be one city. Along with the city of Las Cruces just over the border into New Mexico, these three cities make up the largest two-country and two-language urban area in the western hemisphere and are often called the Borderplex or the Paso del Norte. If you decide to drive over the border make sure your car is insured to drive in Mexico and check your car and tires are in good working order before you make the trip. You can always find a new set of tires at the best prices on our website.

Easy ride to Mexico

One distinctive feature of El Paso is its location right on the Mexican border. This gives the city a very vibrant and multicultural feel, with a great food scene, with a strong focus on Mexican delights.
The city’s location also means that you can easily drive from El Paso to Mexico at one of the four main border crossings, which are all bridges over the Rio Grande. One important thing to note, before driving over to Mexico, is to ensure that your car is fully insured for Mexico, and everything in your vehicle is in good working order.

Comfortable driving

As a smaller city driving in El Paso is generally not as stressful or busy as Texa’s larger metropolitan areas. Drivers in El Paso tend to drive a little slower than in many of the state’s larger cities, which helps to give a calm feeling when driving around the city.
The city also has a good selection of highways to choose from and plenty of wide-open streets, so even if you’re stuck in traffic you won’t feel the claustrophobia that can come from traffic jams in larger cities. That said, you might still want to avoid rush hour which is between 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. And if you do happen to get stuck in traffic you’ll want to ensure your air conditioning is in good working order as temperatures can be high most of the year.

What tires do you need for El Paso weather?

What tires do you need for El Paso weather?
What tires do you need for El Paso weather?

    Hot summers and short winters

El Paso has extremely hot summers and short cool winters, even experiencing snow from time to time in the winter, especially in the nearby mountains. The extreme weather events don’t end there with heavy rain in the summer months, leading to flash flooding in some areas, and dust and sandstorms in the spring. This means that it’s important to choose the right tires for your car and keep your tires in good condition year-round as they may have to contend with some challenging driving conditions.

Drive safely: check your tires regularly!

As well as ensuring your tires have enough tread it’s also important to check your tire pressure regularly, especially in the winter months. Did you know that sudden cold temperatures, like those experienced in El Paso, can cause your tire pressure to drop? For every 10 degrees the temperature drops, your tire pressure will go down by 1 pound. And tires with low pressure can lead to poor traction on icy roads.

    All-rounders for El Paso roads

If your tires have seen better days and you need to get a new pair you can save up to 50% by visiting United Tires website where you’ll find a huge range of all-season tires, which are recommended for most people living in El Paso. If you like to venture out into the mountains or desert you’ll also be able to shop for tires suited to your driving style, including off-road tires and specialist rugged terrain tires.
Sitting in the middle of the desert, as you would expect El Paso has very hot summers with temperatures peaking at over 110°F, and short cold winters, where temperatures have been known to go as low as 1°F, and snowfall is not unheard of. The summers can also experience heavy rainfall and flash flooding, while in springtime you need to be aware of sand and dust storms.
Even with all these fairly extreme weather conditions the standard recommended tire for this city is still an all-season tire. But many El Paso residents also like to take advantage of the beautiful landscape outside the city limits, taking their trucks off-road. For this kind of driver, a set of all-terrain tires or rugged terrain tires might be the best pick. And for vehicles that are rarely driven on paved roads, you might opt for a set of off-road tires.
At United Tires we have one of the widest selections of tires online and offer plenty of advice for our customers to buy tires suited to their vehicle and driving habits.

DRIVERS’ EL PASO GUIDE: PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Drivers’ El Paso guide: practical information
Drivers’ El Paso guide: practical information
While driving in El Paso may be much less stressful than in many larger cities it’s still useful to know the ins and outs of any local laws and driver habits, as well as understanding the highway network.

    Live traffic report

El Paso’s traffic is generally not too bad, compared to many other cities, but it’s still a good idea to check one of these live traffic reports before heading out on the road:

    Seasonal tire changeover

Generally speaking, the average driver only needs to carry out a seasonal tire changeover when living in a climate with long, cold winters. For those of us who are lucky enough to live in warmer areas, like El Paso, a set of versatile all-season tires is the best choice. These tires are sturdy and long-lasting and work well in hot and cold weather, as well as rain and light snow.

At United Tires shop you can find new tires and used tires for all cars. Our all-season tires start from less than $25, helping you drive safely for less.

Motorists who enjoy driving sports cars and other high-performance vehicles might opt to use summer tires in the hotter months as they offer better grip and performance in the heat. As they should not be used at temperatures under 45 °F they are best suited for the months of May - September.

    Driving Laws

Like other cities in Texas, the general state rules of the road should be obeyed. Here are a few to be aware of:

    1. Stick to the speed limits:, while drivers in El Paso are generally quite aware of the speed limit, there are exceptions to this rule, especially on the I-10. This has led to some nasty accidents over the years, so it’s vital to always follow the posted speed limits.
    2. Avoid getting points: in Texas, there is a points-based system known as the Driver Responsibility Program. With the system, every time a violation is committed points are added to the driver’s license, based on how serious the offense was. With too many points a driver may lose their license or be unable to renew it.
    3. No talking or texting: on a cellphone that is. In El Paso police can issue a ticket if a motorist is seen talking on their phone, or texting while driving.
    4. Remember red lights and stop signs: It’s important to always stop at a red light or a stop sign. Failure to do this can leave you with a fine of up to $200.

    Unspoken Road Rules

When driving around El Paso most drivers are fairly calm, but when you hit the I-10 things can change. It’s important to be aware of reckless speeding drivers on the freeway, to avoid any incidents.

Drivers on the freeway are also not always the best at yielding to other cars, even when they are signaling that they need to pull over. So remember to always get into the correct lane well in advance of your exit.

As El Paso is a growing city there is often construction so it’s always a good idea to check local traffic reports and live traffic maps before heading out on the road. This way you’ll avoid any congestion and roads closed due to construction.

    Parking rules

Like most cities parking in El Paso can be tricky at certain times of the day, but generally, it's much more affordable than in larger cities. Here are a few points to note about parking in El Paso:
    1. There are almost 2,000 metered parking spaces around El Paso, with rates starting at $0.25 for 15 minutes.
    2. Metered parking can be paid for using coins, credit cards, and a cellphone app (surcharges apply for the credit card and app payment options).
    3. Parking metered spaces are free from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. as well as on Sundays and all city public holidays.
    4. You can reserve parking spots at the city-owned parking garages at Union Plaza Transit Terminal, Glory Road, and Convention Center, using the city’s Park915 app.
All the city parking information can be found on the City of El Paso’s website.

    Window tint laws

With El Paso being situated in the middle of the desert window tinting is generally considered essential by residents as it keeps your car cooler, saving money on running your a/c all the time.
But it’s important to stick to the local window tinting laws so that your tint is safe and not obstructing your view while driving.
El Paso residents are subject to the Texas Department of Public Safety tinting laws which include the fact that all tints must have at least a light transmittance value of 25% and cannot have a luminous reflectance value of more than 25%.
Correct placement of these tints is also important and they can’t be amber, red, or blue in color.
The full regulations can be found on the Texas Department of Public Safety website. Find out more about the hot trends in the tinting industry today.

    Roads and highways

El Paso is in general a fairly car-focused city with a small amount of public transit and a few bike lanes. It does however have a good network of highways and one Interstate running through the city from northwest to southeast.
    • I-10 - the one Interstate freeway in El Paso runs very close to the downtown area and is a busy, well-used freeway. It connects El Paso all the way to Los Angeles, California in the west and Jacksonville, Florida to the east.
    • US-54 - this route used to connect El Paso with Chicago but now goes as far as Kansas. In El Paso it also goes from the expressway all the way to the Mexican border, along Dyer Street.
    • US-62, US-85 & US-180 - in El Paso the US-62 runs along with the US-85 to the west, joining the I-10, and then to the east, it runs with the US-180 to just south of Lubbock, where they split, with the US-180 going to Dallas-Fort Worth and the US-62 going on to Oklahoma City. In the city of El Paso they follow Montana Avenue, Santa Fe Street and Paisano Drive.

    International bridges

There are four main border crossing bridges in El Paso, for motorists who want to venture into Mexico. Three of these bridges are toll bridges managed by the city of El Paso and one is free to cross.
    • Bridge of the Americas: This is the main border crossing in El Paso and is free to cross, and as a result is the busiest bridge in the city. As well as having two lanes in each direction for traffic it also has pedestrian sidewalks for those who want to walk over the border. It has several names including Puente Libre, Cordova Bridge, and Free Bridge.
    • Stanton Street Bridge: This toll bridge is located very close to the Bridge of the Americas and has five lanes, one of which is just for northbound travelers using Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection (SENTI). This bridge is also called the Good Neighbor International Bridge, Friendship Bridge, and Puente Ciudad Juárez-Stanton El Paso.
    • Paso del Norte International Bridge: The most westerly of the four bridges this bridge has four lanes and is only for non-commercial traffic. This is also one of the US’s busiest international border crossings. It goes by a few other names including Santa Fe Street Bridge, Puente Benito Juáre, and Puente Juárez-Santa Fe.
    • Ysleta–Zaragoza International Bridge: The most southerly of El Paso’s international bridges, the Ysleta–Zaragoza International Bridge is actually two four-lane bridges. One is for private vehicles and has a pedestrian walkway and the other is for commercial vehicles. This bridge is also referred to as the Zaragoza Bridge, Puente Zaragoza, and Puente Ysleta-Zaragoza.
The fees to cross the toll bridges range from $3 to $9 depending on the size and type of vehicle and whether you are paying with cash or with the E-Fast Pass.
You can find out more about the international border crossings, including live traffic cameras and information on the E-Fast Pass on the City of El Paso’s International Bridges website.

    Fun facts

El Paso has a beautifully restored streetcar route, using historic PCC streetcars. The original streetcar network closed in 1974 but was reopened in 2018, with a new circular route involving two loops. The new rolling stock may look like vintage streetcars, complete with the original color scheme, but have all modern amenities including air-conditioning, wi-fi, and wheelchair lifts. The streetcar runs on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and riding it is a must-do for any visitors to the city. And don’t forget to check out the Visit El Paso website to get a free audio tour of the streetcar route.
