Located on the famous Route 66

Located on the former route of the famous Route 66, Amarillo is one of the most northerly cities in Texas. The I-40 runs through the city, going from California in the west all the way to North Carolina in the east, making Amarillo a popular overnight spot for many cross-country road trips. A second Interstate, the I-27 ends in downtown Amarillo after making its way north from Lubbock, also in the state of Texas.

The grid pattern of the downtown streets

Downtown Amarillo is laid out in a grid pattern, with north to south streets originally being named after former presidents, in chronological order. The pattern ended with Grover Cleveland, and this tradition has not continued as the city expanded.
All the downtown streets were originally paved in brick, and while many of the streets now use more modern materials there are still over 16 miles of brick streets to be found in downtown Amarillo.

Choose the right tires for hot Amarillo roads!

The climate in Amarillo is generally hot and clear for most of the summer with short, cold winters and occasional snow. There are sometimes thunderstorms and tornados, and its location on the plains means that it’s often a windy city. For the average Amarillo driver, a set of good quality all-season tires is the most sensible choice, as these tires cope well with wet and dry roads and even light snow.
In most years a set of winter tires is not necessary for Amarillo but for particularly snowy years they can be a good idea, especially for drivers who are likely to venture off the main, well-maintained roads and highways. Alternatively, it can be a good idea to keep a set of snow chains in your trunk between November and March. Amarillo is also home to a lot of truck drivers, so specialist truck tires are also a good idea.

Surrounded by desert, but still getting snow

The City of Amarillo is surrounded by desert and is located on a level with Oklahoma City, meaning it has a climate more similar to this Oklahoma city, than other cities in Texas. This includes colder winters than most of the other cities in this enormous state. Amarillo also enjoys hot summers with yearly temperatures mostly between 25°F and 91°F, although it has been known to go below 13°F on occasion and hit over 100°F a few times a year.
Amarillo probably has the most snow of any Texan city, with an annual average of almost 18 inches of snow, generally between November and March. Most snow is fairly light and only lasts a few days, but every five years or so the city sees a major snowfall and blizzard conditions, which can leave up to 10 inches of snow over the city. Amarillo also sees a few major thunderstorms and tornados a year, mostly between April and June.

All year round safe choice

Despite this occasionally extreme weather, most drivers in Amarillo should choose a quality all-season tire, when they shop for tires. These potential extreme weather conditions do mean that it’s very important to check the depth of your tire tread and your tire pressure on a regular basis, to ensure you are safe to drive, no matter the weather.
For drivers who are likely to leave the major highways and well-maintained roads in winter, a set of winter tires might also be advisable. And for drivers of trucks and other vehicles that venture off the paved roads and out into the desert, specialist tires like all-terrain tires or rugged terrain tires can also be a smart purchase.

DRIVERS’ AMARILLO GUIDE: PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Drivers’ Amarillo guide: practical information
Drivers’ Amarillo guide: practical information
Find out everything you need to know about driving in the “Yellow Rose of Texas”, Amarillo. From live traffic reports to information on the local road network, this guide has you covered.

Live traffic report

While locals of Amarillo like to say they don’t have a rush hour, just a “rush minute” it’s still helpful to keep up to date with any construction work or road closures in this peaceful city. These live traffic reports will make sure you get to where you’re going on time.

Seasonal tire changeover

The weather in Amarillo with long hot summers and short cold winters, with a little snow most years, means that all-season tires are a good all-year-round choice for the average driver, who can avoid smaller back roads for the few days of snow each year.
However, some drivers will need to regularly drive on untreated roads in winter and for them, changing to winter tires might be the safest option, or keeping a set of snow chains in the trunk. Generally speaking, the temperatures are only low enough for winter tires in December and January but there can be snow from November through to February or March, so depending on the year you may need to alter your seasonal tire changeover dates.

Snow chains

As Amarillo occasionally gets heavy blizzards (once every five years or so) it is a good idea for all drivers to keep a set of snow chains in their trunks during the winter. You can legally use these in Amarillo for safety reasons, including icy roads or heavy snow. The exact wording of the tire chain law from the Texas Transportation Code “is a tire chain of reasonable proportion that is used as required for safety because of a condition that might cause the vehicle to skid.”

Driving Laws

Driving in Amarillo is generally pretty relaxed but it’s important to stick to the rules of the road. Here are a few to be aware of:
  • Stick to the speed limit: in Amarillo speed limits aren’t always posted so it’s important to remember that there’s a 30mph limit in residential areas and a 15mph limit on alleys.
  • Avoid getting points: For drivers with Texas driving licenses, if a motorist receives a citation in Amarillo they can avoid having points added to their license by taking a state-approved Driving Safety Course (DSC). There is a window of 90 days to take the course and if a DSC has been taken by the driver in the last 12 months they cannot take another one. Read all about Amarillo DSC rules on the City of Amarillo website.
  • Cell phones away: In school zones, it’s totally prohibited from using a cell phone while behind the wheel, so put them away. Motorists breaking this law can be liable for fines of up to $20.
  • Red-light cameras: Although Amarillo has some red light cameras around the city, apparently there is no legal benefit to paying any tickets you get from them. The tickets will not harm your driving license or put up insurance premiums. However, if you do need to do other business with the City of Amarillo you should pay the fine.

Unspoken Road Rules

Fortunately for motorists, driving around Amarillo is usually quick and easy, with very rare traffic jams. However, it is very much a driving city as it’s spread out over a large area.
With its small city feel it’s quite a relaxed place to drive so try and slow down and go with the flow. No big city honking of horns and cutting people off here, so take the cowboy attitude of staying calm and polite and going with the flow.

Parking rules

Like many other things in Amarillo, parking is usually not too stressful, and finding a spot isn’t too difficult. But here are four tips to make it even easier.
  1. Free lots: In the downtown area there are several free surface lots in the area around the Civic Center.
  2. On-street downtown parking: Most streets in the downtown area have on-street parking which is paid for either by the hour or by the day. Parking in these spaces is free outside of the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
  3. ParkMobile: You can pay for on-street parking with an app called ParkMobile. When using the app you don’t need to display a ticket on your car as parking enforcers can see the status of your parking using an app.
  4. Impounded vehicles: If there are $300 of unpaid civil penalties on a vehicle, or the vehicle has six or more civil nuisance violations in the last 12 months it will be impounded.
Learn all about parking in Amarillo on the City of Amarillo Website.

Window tint laws

Amarillo uses the same window tinting laws as the rest of the state of Texas, and these can be fairly strict, making sure all road users are visible to drivers. One important thing to remember about window tints is that they must be certified in Texas.
There are regulations around the colors of tints allowed, so they do not interfere with the visibility of traffic lights. It’s illegal to have blue, amber, or red tints.
Window tints can only be applied on the top 5 inches of the windshield and on all other windows. All tints must have a VTL (visible light transmittance) of at least 25% and less than 25% reflection
You can read all about the window tinting laws on the Texas Department of Public Safety website.

Roads and highways

Even though Amarillo is a relatively small city with a population of just over 200,000 it still has two Interstate Freeways and six other highways.
  • I-40 — this cross-country interstate goes right through the center of Amarillo passing by the south side of the downtown district.
  • I-27 — this interstate doesn’t actually go between states, as it begins just south of the I-40 and ends in Lubbock, Texas
  • US-87 — this is the main north-south road through the center of Amarillo and it splits into four one-way streets in downtown, namely Buchanan, Pierce, Fillmore, and Taylor. Then south of the city the US-87 becomes the I-27.
  • Loop 335 — This loop road goes all the way around the City of Amarillo and is made up of four roads, Hollywood Road, Lakeside Drive, FM 1719, and Soncy Road.

Downtown and Route 66 Historic District

The downtown area is bordered by 1st Avenue to the north and the I-40 to the south and some of the busiest roads in the downtown area are Amarillo Boulevard, Washington Street, Ross Mirror Street, and Georgia Street.
A must-see for many visitors to Amarillo the Historic Route 66 District starts at Georgia Street and 6th Avenue to the east and ends around Western Street in the west.

What tires are best for Amarillo?

All-season would be the number one choice. But overall, there are several different types of tires that are best for Amarillo Texas depending on your vehicle and exactly where you drive. All-season tires are a good choice for most people, but during the winter, if you head off the main, cleared roads you might want to opt for winter tires. Off-road tires are a good choice if you're planning on doing any off-roading, and all-terrain tires are a good all-around tire that can handle most conditions. Whatever type of tire you’re looking for you’ll find the best prices, shop online on our website, benefit from the lowest prices in the online tire world and enjoy free FedEx shipping!

Do I need winter tires in Amarillo?

Not really. Amarillo is located in the Texas Panhandle, which means that it can get cold in the winter. However, winters are usually mild and dry, with only a few days each year with heavy snow. So, do you need winter tires in Amarillo?
Winter tires are designed to perform better in cold temperatures and on snowy or icy roads. They're made from a different type of rubber compound that helps them maintain flexibility in frigid weather, and they also have deeper treads to provide better traction.
If it’s a relatively mild winter, all-season tires should suffice. However, if you frequently drive off well-maintained roads in the winter months, or if it’s a particularly harsh winter with significant amounts of snow and ice, winter tires may be a good option to consider. Ultimately, it's up to each driver to decide whether winter tires are necessary based on their own driving needs and habits.
