Did You know

Did you know that…

Savannah is the first American planned city!

James Edward Oglethorpe, the founder of the Georgia Colony (and the town of Savannah), established the first-ever grid structure for the new settlement in 1773. He laid the city out in a system of grids where the “civic” and the “residential” blocks were arrayed around a park and a square that played a role of a town meeting, and a “business” center. Each tithing was assigned a square mile plot of land outside the city for farming, and families were also assigned 5 acres as “kitchen gardens”. The design proved remarkably adaptable as the city grew. Overall, the original city was built out of 24 squares, and 22 exist as of today. Savannah’s modern grid system is pretty much following the original Oglethorpe Plan.

Savannah is “strategically” located on the Atlantic coast, and its port plays an important role in the country’s economy. For example, since the beginning of operation in 2010, Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (located in West Point) has shipped over 350,000 twenty feet containers through Savannah! And soon a lot of job opportunities will open when Hyundai Motors will open its EV factory here. The city has a well-functioning network of roads, and it was the first in the US to feature the grid system, according to the Oglethorpe Plan — the urban planning idea that came to live here as early as the 1730s!

The first capital of the American Gran Prix Race!

DRIVERS’ SAVANNAH GUIDE: PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Drivers’ Savannah guide: practical information
Drivers’ Savannah guide: practical information
The Hostess City of the South has a lot to offer: from picturesque seaside and beaches to fine restaurants, from historic sites to lively events. To make sure your trip (or residency) in Savannah is about enjoyment, the United Tires experts created this little Guide. It includes all the information you need about driving in the city: rules and regulations, traffic jams, tinting laws, and much more. Read on and enjoy the ride!

Live traffic report

Savannah traffic overall cannot be called bad. On average, the residents of the city “lose” around 14 hours in traffic jams annually. Compare it to Atlanta’s 53 hours, and you’ll feel the difference! The average commute time in Savanna is only 20 minutes, but to avoid the morning and the evening traffic, refer to these reputable online resources:

Seasonal tire changeover

All year round

Savannah is a blessed destination where drivers aren’t legally required to change their tires when the seasons change. As we mentioned before, you will feel totally comfortable and safe driving on all-season tires. But high-quality summer rubber will be also perfect for the warm and often rainy Savannah weather. Summer tires are manufactured from a stiffer rubber compound that features deeper grooves to prevent aquaplaning. And performance tires will suit high-profile vehicles or those who are into speed. If you race on the professional level, choose cheap racing or drag racing tires from our catalog and significantly save cash!

Driving Laws

Follow these 5 key rules to avoid getting a ticket:
  1. All drivers must have insurance: $25,000 of bodily’s liability per person, $50,000 of bodily’s liability per accident, and $25,000 of property damage
  2. A driver cannot hold the phone while operating a vehicle. However, the use of hands-free devices is legal
  3. During the rain, the headlights must be on, even in daytime
  4. To pass the driving test, the driver’s skills must comply with Joshua’s law — a specific set of rules that is in force in Georgia
  5. If a traffic light on the intersection is out, treat it as a four-way stop

Window tint laws

If you are at Savannah or just planning a visit, please make sure your car window tinting complies with the state’s legal requirements.
  • Tint darkness for sedans must allow at least 32% of light in (for all windows)
  • Tint darkness for SUVs and vans must allow at least 32% of light in for the front side windows. Tints of any darkness can be used on the back side and rear windows

FAQ

Where to buy tires in Savannah?

In reputable mega malls like Walmart Supercenter, in small private shops, or online. Here on the United Tires website, we offer cheap tires for Savannah that won’t disappoint. You can choose high-quality used tires, and save up to 50% in comparison with similar new ones. By buying used tires, you’re still getting perfect tread left, or a top-of-the-industry model, but also getting an opportunity to spend money on something else for your family!

Do I need winter tires in Savannah?

No, you don’t. Savannah enjoys warm weather throughout the year, and you will be perfectly fine on all-season or summer tires. If you choose to buy new or used summer tires, though, remember that they require a more frequent changeover, once in 5-6 years.

Can I use all-season tires all year round in Savannah?

Yes, you can. Savannah’s humid subtropical climate is perfect for all-season tires. They are made from rubber compound that runs well on the warm road’s surface, and the tread pattern provides good handling and prevents aquaplaning in case of heavy rains.
