Did You know

Windshield wipers were invented in Birmingham AL!

Windshield wipers were invented in Birmingham AL in 1903! Mary Anderson, a native Brummy, has even patented the invention, but none of the manufacturers that she had offered the wipers to wanted them! They considered them destructive for driving! Only 19 years later, in 1922, Cadillac adopted the invention, making windshield wipers a piece of standard equipment for its vehicles.

The industrial capital of the South

Birmingham AL is and has always been an important point on the automotive map of the U.S. Founded in 1871, it was named after Birmingham in the Old World — the industrial capital of England. The American Birmingham was meant to become an important post-Civil War reconstruction city, and it did.
Being the only place in the world where coal, limestone and iron ore (the three components of iron) are found in close proximity to each other, Birmingham has become the place that kickstarted the American railroad boom. Civil construction and automotive manufacturing followed.

Car manufacturing pioneers

The spirit of success spread from railroad manufacturing to the production of cars. Great Southern Automobile Co. has become the first Birmingham vehicle manufacturer. With headquarters in Birmingham, it started its operation in 1909 and manufactured cars, buses, and car parts at a plant in Ensley. The first vehicle it produced was a touring car called “Model 50”, followed by a two-seater “Great Southern 30” and a six-seater “Great Southern 51”. Something didn’t go to plan, and the company went bankrupt in 1917.
Preston Motor Co. also didn’t last but a few years, from 1919 to 1923. “Premocars” only served the Alabamians for a short period in history, and only a radiator badge is known to survive the time: you can still find it in a private collection in Georgia.

Autocar trucks assembly in Birmingham

The Autocar Company has a whooping 124-year-old history. Founded in 1897, it has had many important milestones along the way. Today Autocar is an independent company and a reputable industry leader, making premium severe-duty chassis. One of its two assemblies is located in Birmingham. Here, at 4680 Pinson Valley Pkwy, Birmingham, AL 35215 the AXC cabover and DC trucks are produced.

The largest motorcycle museum in the world

The Guinness Book of World Records made it official: Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in Birmingham Al has the largest collection of motorcycles in the world! It is a wonder in itself: even the building is mesmerizing! The collection encounters over 1,400 motorcycles of all ages — both vintage and contemporary — and presents some very rare exhibits. The adjacent Barber Motorsports Park is a race track, hosting such famous events as the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. Birmingham is the only city on the North American Indy Circuit. Looking for tires matching the scale of this event? Shop for racing, drag racing, or competition tires on Utires.com and enjoy our free FedEx delivery right to the track!

The Annual Alabama Auto Show

Every year Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex hosts the Alabama Auto Show, organized by the Birmingham Automobile Dealers Association. The visitors enjoy the acquaintance with the brand new models both domestic and international car models. It is an important event, not to be missed at the end of March. And when you choose your ride at the Alabama Auto Show, don’t forget to equip it with a set of high-quality tires! What tires do you need for Birmingham weather?

What tires do you need for Birmingham weather?
What tires do you need for Birmingham weather?
Birmingham is situated in the north-central part of Alabama, in the Jones Valley. It has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, mild winters, and abundant rainfall throughout the year. Birmingham AL lies right in the heart of Tornado Alley, and hurricanes and tropical storms aren’t uncommon here. Most Brummies drive on all-season tires, and they are pretty much right!
All-season tires are specially designed for mild weather and temperatures above 45 °F. Their rubber compound is designed to adjust to versatile conditions — but nothing too extreme! They provide optimal grip with dry, wet, or lightly snowy road surfaces. If you opt for an enhanced driving experience and need tires for sale in Birmingham AL, cruise through our summer tires or performance tires sections. But keep in mind that if you decide to buy them, a seasonal tire changeover is highly recommended.
Summer and performance tires do have a special tread pattern with deep grooves for better grip and aquaplaning prevention, but they are also made of a stiffer rubber compound that would be simply “freezing” when temperatures drop below 45 °F. Discount tires in Birmingham AL are available online at Utires.com, and our best tire deals allow you to save up to 50% of your tire budget! Shop now, get your order confirmed before 1 p.m., and your tires will be shipped on the same business day!

DRIVERS’ BIRMINGHAM GUIDE: PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Drivers’ Birmingham guide: practical information
Drivers’ Birmingham guide: practical information
This little guide has been specially created for all drivers of the Magic City! United Tires experts have selected the most important traffic rules, car window tinting regulations, parking restrictions, and much more! Read, make notes, and enjoy your Birmingham ride!

Live traffic report

Birmingham is the city with the worst traffic in Alabama. The Brummies spend over 40 hours (3,3 hours monthly) in traffic jams annually! Honestly, it’s nothing in comparison to the world capitals, but for a quiet Crimson Tide state, it’s a lot. The worst hours to find yourself on the road are 7:30-9:00 a.m. and 4:30-6:30 p.m. Use these trustworthy online resources and apps to plan your commuting smartly:

Seasonal tire changeover

The humid subtropical climate of Birmingham AL does not really require winter, or snow tires. According to Alabama Code Title 32. Motor Vehicles and Traffic § 32-5-210, driving on studded tires or on the tires equipped with snow chains is illegal in Birmingham, besides severe weather conditions, when studs or chains can prevent the vehicle from skidding or sliding on the road.
As tire experts, we recommend getting a set of quality all-season tires that you can use all year round. By choosing tires for sale in Birmingham AL on our website, you can save up to 50% and get two sets of tires instead of just one! In this case, a good idea is to buy summer or performance tires in Birmingham AL — and when the temperature steadily drops below 45 °F, change them to all-season.
Choose from over 55,000 new and used all-season tires, and customize your search based on the tire size, model, brand, vehicle type, and performance. We have a perfect tire for each of these categories! A very interesting section of our catalog is driven only once tires — basically, they have been only tried on, but never used, which means you’re buying cheap tires in Birmingham AL, but getting absolutely new rubber! Safety is our number one priority. All tires sold on Utires.com are meticulously checked, and their high quality is backed up by a hassle-free return policy. You can return your order within 1 year after the purchase, and get a full refund, or a replacement for a different model.

  7. The right-of-way is given by the vehicle on the left to the vehicle on the right
  8. Text messaging while driving is illegal in Birmingham, however, speaking on the phone is not.

Parking rules

Birmingham streets cannot be called super busy, but one can still be in search of a good parking spot. Follow Alabama Code Title 32. Motor Vehicles and Traffic
Section 32-5A-137 and you’ll be just fine:
  • Double parking is prohibited in Birmingham
  • Stopping, standing, or parking is prohibited: on sidewalks of Birmingham: within 20 feet or at the intersections or on crosswalks in Birmingham; between a safety zone and the adjacent curb; alongside or across the street from the road works; within 50 feet or on any railroad tracks; within 15 feet from a fire hydrant.

Roads and highways

Interstate highways and bypasses

The under-construction “Birmingham North Beltline” is the Interstate I-422 that is set to bypass the Birmingham metropolis. State Alabama Route 959 is a part of it too. The Interstate I-459 is a bypass of I-59 loops around southern Birmingham and connects I-20 and I-59 in Bessemer and I-59 near Trussville. The busy metropolitan area of Birmingham also hosts Interstates 22, 59, 65, and 459. Unfortunately, there are no toll roads in the region, but just try to avoid the rush hours, and you will be fine.

FAQ

Where to buy tires in Birmingham?

Brummies are truly spoiled with choices for tire shopping! Huge mega-malls like Walmart and Costco, tire brands’ dealerships, private shops… The choice is totally yours! Online tire shopping is also gaining big popularity in Magic City. United Tires is your “Tire shop near me in Birmingham'': just visit our website, choose from over 60,000 new and used tires and get a free and super fast delivery right to your Birmingham doorstep!

Can you drive on all-season tires all year round in Birmingham?

Yes, and it is recommended by tire experts. All-season tires have been specially designated for locations like Birmingham AL: the climate here is relevantly mild, with abundant rainfall throughout the year. All-season tires “bear” these conditions really well, providing a solid grip on the road surface, good handling, and effective aquaplaning prevention. All-season tires are made from a special rubber compound that can “adjust” both to hot and cold temperatures, but nothing too extreme.

Can you drive on summer tires all year round in Birmingham?

We don’t recommend doing so. Summer tires are produced from a harder rubber compound and their tread is specially designed for preventing aquaplaning during rainfalls. But when the temperatures significantly drop (below 45 °F), they become dangerous to drive. The compound stiffens, turning your wheels into skates! So in case you prefer an enhanced summer tire performance, but want to be safe on the road, it is highly advisable getting two sets of tires. Here at Utires.com, you can do so with up to a 50% discount, which means getting two sets of tires instead of just one! Need help in choosing the right model? Get in touch with our 24/7 customer support: via Live Chat or by calling toll-free at 1-888-566-6214!
