SUV tires usually have much higher tread depth which allow good traction in off-road conditions. You can see when it’s time to change a tire by looking at the tread wear indicators — small bumps on the tires that are placed between the grooves. In case they are leveled with the tread, you should change the tire immediately.
The minimum legal tread depth for general road tires is 1.6 mm. But you should definitely not go that low, as these tires will not perform well on wet roads, snow or ice. The braking performance will be reduced, and so will be the safety of your car.

Tread design: directional and asymmetric
The tread is the part of the tire which gets in contact with the road, and tires these days have a wide variety of models. SUVs are made to perform in tough road conditions off-road, including mud or snow, therefore, most of them have directional or asymmetric tread patterns. - Directional tread pattern — the tread has a v-shaped pattern with wide grooves between the tread blocks. The arrow on the sidewall shows which way the tire has to roll (can be only one direction). Speed index: designed for moderation, but can go pretty fast
Speed index (also called speed rating) shows the maximum speed at which a tire can carry the weight shown by the load index. The number shown by the manufacturer was tested in ideal road conditions, but in real life it also depends on the age of the tire, the pressure, the road and weather conditions, and other factors.
SUVs that are designed specifically for heavy off-road terrains do not need to go at high speeds, so their speed index is usually a Q (99 mph) or an S (112 mph). However, these days most of the SUVs are meant to be driven in the city and on highways, so their speed indexes can be compared to those of passenger vehicles.

Load Index: capable of carrying a lot
Load index of a tire shows the maximum load that it can hold at the speed indicated by the speed index. The higher the index, the bigger the load, so double check this characteristic in case you plan on carrying heavy things with your SUV or pickup truck.
While SUV tires usually have lower speed indexes compared to regular tires, they also have higher load indexes. This index shows the “weight carrying” capacity of the tires with the maximum pressure, so this number goes down in case the pressure is reduced.
