Did You know

Did you know that?..

Richmond was home to the world’s first public electric streetcar

In 1888, Richmond became home to the world's first-ever public electric streetcar network. At the time, a lot of people were skeptical about whether streetcars could successfully navigate a city with lots of hills. The middle of Broad Street, which featured a large slope, served as a kind of public demonstration and the streetcars proved that they could climb hills perfectly well. The streetcars quickly became a major catalyst for the city's growth. Today, Richmond's streetcar system may be gone, but think about it when you look at the hills that make the city such a beautiful place to live.

What tires do you need for Richmond weather?

What tires do you need for Richmond weather?
What tires do you need for Richmond weather?
River City has hot, muggy summers and fairly cold, snowy winters. The weather can have a big impact on driving conditions, especially during the winter months. For the few days a year when the roads are covered in snow and ice, it can be more difficult to drive safely, when the roads are slick. The good news is that Richmond's winters are usually short-lived, and springtime brings warmer temperatures and dryer conditions. However, even in the spring, it's important to be aware of sudden changes in the weather. Thunderstorms can cause standing water on the roads, which can make driving conditions dangerous. As a result, it's a good idea to pay attention to the local weather forecast before heading out on the road.

Winter months

River City sees enough snow that, if driving is a priority, winter tires are a good idea. However, with only 10 inches or so of snow each year, if you can avoid driving on the snowiest days, and live in the city, you can probably get by with snow and mud-rated all-season tires. Special winter tires have a rubber compound that doesn’t harden up when temperatures plummet, and a tread pattern designed to cope with ice or snow. On the other hand, all-season tires that are rated for mud and snow can deal with light snowfall, so you may need to leave your car at home on River City’s few very snowy days.

Warmer months

For the majority of the year, the ideal tires are all-season tires, and in fact, for some people, they are a good all-year-round option. These tires are made to function well in a wide range of conditions from hot to cold (but not extended periods of freezing weather), and wet and dry roads. Many, but not all, all-season tires are also rated for driving in mud and light snow so these are the best choice for River City. You’ll know if yours are as they’ll have an M+S marked on them. The main advantage of all-season tires, as well as their flexibility, is their durability and comfort, so they are great value-for-money options for most families.

DRIVERS’ RICHMOND GUIDE: PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Drivers’ Richmond guide: practical information
Drivers’ Richmond guide: practical information
While the downtown area of River City does have a lot of one-way streets, it’s actually a pretty straightforward city to drive in. We make it even easier for you with information on all you need to drive here, from parking information to when to change your tires for winter.

Live traffic report

Rush hour and construction in the city can cause issues, especially the hours of 8-9:30 a.m. and 3:30-7 p.m. As a result, it’s a good idea to check the latest traffic news:

Seasonal tire changeover

In River City, most people don’t need to do a seasonal tire changeover, especially if they live within the city limits. Here there isn’t a lot of snow and roads are well maintained. A set of all-season tires will set you in good stead for almost every day of the year, especially if they are marked with an M+S for mud and snow. These tires will cope with sprinklings of snow and colder days, as well as the warmer months and wet, rainy roads.

Winter

A few people in the city may need to change their tires for winter, if they absolutely have to be able to drive at all times, or if they need to leave the city and go out into rural areas in the winter months. If that is the case for you, you can put some winter tires on your car from November or December to March. But always remember to take them off when the weather warms up, as the rubber designed for cold weather will wear down quickly once the temperatures go up.

Driving Laws

While many driving laws are the same nationwide there are usually some local differences you should be aware of. Here are a few things to watch out for in River City:
  1. Seat belts are only required for people 18 and over in the front of the car, but for everyone under 18 in the rear seat.
  2. Cellphones can only be used hands-free, but if you’re a learner driver you can’t use your cellphone at all.
  3. Young drivers can begin learning to drive at 15 years and 6 months but won’t have full driving privileges until 18 years old.
  4. Drink driving penalties start at a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% and penalties get tougher if you have a BAC of .15% and .20%.
  5. Older drivers over the age of 75 need to have a vision test with their license renewals, and these take place every 5 years instead of the standard 8 years.

Parking rules

Every city handles parking slightly differently so here’s the low-down on parking in River City:
  • 20,000 spaces: You shouldn’t have a problem finding parking in the downtown area with over 20,000 spaces (mostly city-owned) to choose from.
  • PassportParking: You can use the city’s mobile parking app to pay for on-street parking.
  • Time limits: On-street parking time limits range from 15 minutes up to 3 hours. If you need to park for longer you can park in a lot or parking garage.
  • Free parking: You can park for free in most on-street parking spaces between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. Monday to Friday and all weekends. But do check for signage as some areas do charge for parking on weekends.
You can find all about parking options, lots, and regulations on the City of Richmond’s official parking website.

Window tint laws

Tinting your car windows will make your car cooler and give you more privacy. But it’s important to understand the regulations where you live. In Richmond they use the state’s laws so you can learn all about them on the official Virginia State legislature website:
  • Windshield tinting can only be applied above the AS-1 line.
  • Front-side window tinting must allow in at least 50% visible light.
  • Rear and rear-side windows tinting must allow in at least 35% visible light.
  • Reflective tints must not have a reflective value of over 20%.
  • Colored tints are allowed as long as they aren’t red, yellow, or amber.
Learn all about the multitude of options for tinting your vehicle windows, including a wide range of colors and styles of tints.

Helmet laws

River City is subject to the helmet laws of the State of Virginia, and unlike most other states, they have very comprehensive helmet laws. All motorcycle riders and passengers must wear an approved helmet.

Roads and highways

River City is very well served for major highways and is well connected to the rest of the State of Virginia, the East Coast, and the country:
I-64 is a major east-west interstate highway that passes through the center of the city, connecting it to Missouri to the west and the Hampton Roads region, to the east. The highway intersects with both I-95 and I-295 within the city boundaries and provides access to several of Richmond's major attractions, including the downtown area, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
I-95, also known as the Richmond–Petersburg Turnpike in the Richmond area, is the main east coast interstate highway that passes through the center of the city, connecting it to Maine to the north and Florida to the south. The highway runs concurrently with the I-64 within the city boundaries.
I-295 is an auxiliary interstate highway that connects I-64 and I-95 to the east of the city, providing a partial loop-way around the city before going south to Petersburg.
US 1 is a major north-south U.S. highway that passes through Richmond along with the US 301. It runs as Brook Rd, Azalea Ave, Chamberlayne Ave, Belvedere St, Cowardin Ave, and Jefferson Davis Hwy within the city limits.
SR 288 forms an almost complete loop-way with the I-295, going around to the west of the city. To the north of the city, it intersects with the I-64 near Short Pump, and to the south, it intersects with the I-95 south of Bellwood.

With its location on the East Coast, River City is home to lots of SUVs and sedans, and the most popular vehicle in the city is the Honda CR-V, a comfortable SUV. When buying tires for a specific vehicle, you can search for tires that will specifically fit your make and model of car or SUV. You’ll find thousands of Honda CR-V tires on our site for all types of driving and terrain.
While you can buy specialist SUV tires, these are designed for a mix of on and off-road driving, so may not be best suited to drivers in the River City area. However, if you regularly drive out into the mountains in your SUV they can be a great choice, offering a good balance between on-road comfort and off-road stability. Many SUV drivers in the Richmond area will find touring tires a more suitable option as they are designed for comfort and great gas mileage on highways and paved roads.
