1. Stop for school busses: while it’s a law nationwide that drivers should stop when school bus lights are flashing or the sign is out, many people in Dallas didn’t do this. So Texan lawmakers have increased the fines for breaking this law up to a maximum of $2,000
2. Highways right of way: if the highway you are on has more than 2 lanes drivers should yield to the car on the left when changing lanes. Again, there are big fines in place for breaking this rule
3. DUI for passengers too: if the driver of a car gets a DUI it’s possible for all the passengers to lose their licenses too
4. Windshields or windshield wipers: while it’s illegal to drive without windshield wipers it’s not illegal to drive without a windshield
5. No tailgating: although this is hard to believe watching drivers’ behavior in Dallas, you can get a ticket for driving too close to the car in front of you

• Park carefully: parking across two spaces or too far from the curb can result in a ticket, so make sure to park carefully
• Read the signs: make sure to check any signs indicating street cleaning schedules or towing regulations, as well as time limits on parking spaces

Dallas’ Famous Intersections

• High Five - this five-level stack interchange was built in the early 2000s to replace an old interchange from the 1960s. This interchange has 43 bridges and the highest ramps are 100 feet above the ground, making it an exciting drive. There is also a hiking and biking trail incorporated into the interchange, making it more accessible for non-car drivers.
• Mixmaster/Horseshoe - the infamous Mixmaster interchange was state-of-the-art when it was built in the 1950s but more than 50 years later it was well in need of a full rethink. So in 2013 work began to build the Horseshoe, which replaced it. Before its overhaul, Mixmaster was one of the most congested roads in Texas, as it was not designed for today’s volume of traffic. The new Horseshoe interchange involved building over 73 lane miles of new roadway and the project has won many engineering awards.

Major Dallas highways

• I-20: Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway - this major freeway heads through the city from west to east to the west going through Fort Worth before meeting up with the I-10 near the Mexican border. To the east, this freeway carries on into Louisiana, Alabama, and beyond.
• I-35 (I-35E: South R.L. Thornton Freeway and Stemmons Freeway and I-35W: South Freeway and North Freeway) - heading from north to south this freeway splits into two just north of the Dallas metropolitan area and joins up again south of the city. I-35W passes through Forth Worth, while I-35E goes through the center of Dallas. Following the I-35 south brings you to the Mexican border after going through Waco, Austin, and San Antonio, then to the north, it takes you to Oklahoma.
• I-30: West Freeway, Tom Landry Freeway and East R. L. Thornton Freeway - This freeway runs west to east through Fort Worth and Dallas, starting just to the west of the city at the I-20 junction. To the east this freeway crosses over into Arkansas, ending in Little Rock.
• I-635: Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway - this joins the I-20 to loop around most of the city of Dallas, passing through many of the suburban areas.
• I-45 Julius Schepps Freeway - this freeway joins Dallas with Houston to the south, starting in downtown Dallas.
