Did You know

Did you know that?..

Sioux Falls lays claim to the invention of the first 4-door car!

The first 4-door car was invented by Thomas Fawick in the Best Little City in America. The car was called the Fawick Flyer and it was a unique car, for its time, because it had four doors, instead of the usual two. The first Fawick Flyer was built in 1908, and President Theodore Roosevelt was even reported to have ridden in one when he visited the city in 1910. Only 5 Fawick Flyers were ever built and they were all slightly different - quite common for cars of that era. If you happen to be near the Old Courthouse Museum in Sioux Falls you can find one on display there.

Winter driving tips

If you’re visiting or moving to the Best Little City in America from a warmer state you’re probably not used to long, cold winters, and winter driving. So here are a few tips to keep you safe on the roads.
  • Make sure your vehicle is in good condition. Check the tires to ensure they have adequate tread depth and inflation, and seriously consider using winter tires, instead of your regular tires. In addition, keep an eye on the battery and replace it if necessary.
  • Be prepared. It's also a good idea to have an emergency kit in the car, including things like jumper cables, warm blankets, water, a mobile phone battery pack, a flashlight, and first-aid supplies.
  • Take your time. Accelerate and brake slowly to avoid skidding on icy roads. And give yourself extra time to reach your destination so you don't feel rushed or stressed.
  • Stay alert and aware of your surroundings. Watch for pedestrians and other vehicles, and be prepared to stop if necessary.

What tires do you need for Sioux Falls weather?

What tires do you need for Sioux Falls weather?
Locals and visitors to the Best Little City in America can expect to experience a variety of weather conditions throughout the year. The area experiences very cold winters, with temperatures regularly below freezing. Snowfall is also common here, with an average of 45 inches per year. This can impact driving conditions, so it's important to be prepared for snow and ice if you're planning to travel during the winter months. Springs and Autumns are short and pleasant while Summers are hot and humid, with temperatures often reaching the mid 90’s. Due to the high humidity levels, thunderstorms are a risk.

Winter

The Best Little City in America has enough snow and cold enough temperatures in winter to cause icy conditions on roads and highways. Winter tires are specifically designed to provide superior traction on icy and snow-covered surfaces, making them an important safety feature for any driver. In addition, winter tires tend to be made from a softer rubber compound that remains pliable in cold weather, providing a better grip than regular tires. For these reasons, it is generally advisable to invest in a set of winter tires if you live in and around the city and want to be able to drive safely in the long winter months.

Summer

Many drivers here choose to switch to all-season tires when the weather starts to warm up in spring. They are a good choice for a number of reasons. First, they provide consistent traction and handling in a variety of conditions, including dry pavement, wet roads, and even light snow (if you get tires with M&S markings for mud and snow). In addition, all-season tires tend to have a longer lifespan than summer or winter tires, so you can get more mileage out of them before needing to replace them. Finally, they offer a smoother ride and are less likely to produce excess noise than many other types of tires.

DRIVERS’ SIOUX FALLS GUIDE: PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Drivers’ Sioux Falls guide: practical information
Drivers’ Sioux Falls guide: practical information
While driving in the Best Little City in America is pretty straightforward, it still pays to get the local lowdown on things like rules of the road, parking, and when to switch to winter tires. We’ve covered all that and more in our driving guide.

Live traffic report

Traffic in the city isn’t a big problem, apart from when the snow comes. Here are some local traffic reports to help keep you moving:

Seasonal tire changeover

With all the snow and winter weather the Best Little City in America experiences, it’s important for almost everyone to carry out a seasonal tire changeover.

Winter driving

The city can see snow as early as October and as late as April so many people choose to put winter tires on for these 7 months of the year. Some people prefer to use snow tires, which have treads specially designed to clear snow and slush from your path and use a type of rubber that doesn’t harden up in cold weather, helping you grip the road. Another popular choice is ice tires, as in the area temperatures can be below freezing for long periods of time causing ice to form on the roads. Ice tires have treads made to break up the ice giving you traction, whilst also using a type of rubber that doesn’t go rigid in the cold.
Studded tires or studdable tires are also a good choice, if you drive out of the city a lot, as the metal studs really dig into the ice giving you the best traction on icy roads. Across the state studded tires can be used from October 1 to April 30 and you can read more about this regulation on the South Dakota Highway Patrol’s official website.

Spring, summer, and fall driving

From April or May until October or November a great option is all-season tires. We suggest you choose ones marked with an M+S mark, to show they can be used in both mud and snow. This means they’ll cope with any unseasonably early or late snow flurries, as well as summer rain, dry roads, and even slightly rough terrain. These tires are great all-rounders and offer value for money as well. They’re hardwearing and long-lasting and will give you a comfortable and quiet ride on highways and city streets.

Driving Laws

Here are a few key driving laws you should be aware of in the Best Little City in America:
  • Driving young: You can get your learner’s permit at only 14 years of age, although the permit does come with plenty of restrictions. You can read all about them on the South Dakota Department of Public Safety’s official website.
  • Right on red: As long as you don’t see any signs restricting right turns on red they are perfectly legal.
  • Interstate speed limits: Interstates here have both maximum and minimum speed limits. The top speed is a swift 80 mph and the minimum speed permitted is 40 mph.
  • Blinkers on: You are required by law to use your turn signals when making a turn - despite the fact that many people seem to regard it as a mere courtesy. And if your blinker lights aren’t working you need to use hand signals.
  • Cellphone use: While it’s against the law to text while driving you can make a phone call without using a hands-free device while driving - one of the few states where this is still legal.

Unspoken Road Rules

We’ve talked to some locals and found out some local tips and warnings for driving around the Best Little City in America:
  • No lights, no problem: In most cities, come dusk, people turn on their headlights. Here people don’t always seem to remember to, so watch out for cars driving ‘dark’.
  • What speed limit: It often seems like speed limits are merely a suggestion when driving around the city - although we always recommend you obey the posted limits.
  • Potholes galore: After the winter freeze has damaged the pavement, watch out for the potholes everywhere - land in one wrong and you can dent your rims, or even get a flat tire.
  • Yellow means go, go, go: Drivers here seem to take the amber light as a challenge to get through the junction as quickly as possible. Be aware of this if you’re the first to pull out when the lights go green.

Parking rules

Parking in the Best Little City in America is generally not too stressful but here are some tips to help you out:
  • Tickets: If you get a parking ticket you can pay online on the official website of the City of Sioux Falls Parking Department.
  • Metered parking: The city has more than 1,000 metered spaces in the downtown area.
  • Parking garages: There are over 2,500 spaces in off-street parking lots and garages in the downtown area.
  • Free parking: All downtown lots and metered spaces are free every day after 5 p.m. and on all city holidays and all weekends.
You can find full information about parking in the city, plus a map of all the downtown parking options on the official Downtown Sioux Falls website.

Window tint laws

  • Windshield: You may only tint above the manufacturer’s AS-1 lines.
  • Front side windows: Any tint must allow at least 35% of light in.
  • Rear and rear side windows: Any tint must allow at least 20% of light in.

With the top four most popular vehicles in the Best Little City in America being pickup trucks then specific light truck tires are often the most popular choice. These tires have deeper treads, to make off-road driving safer and more efficient, stiff sidewalls for durability, and a higher load index so you can tow or carry very heavy loads in your trucks. While these tires give great handling they are not quite so comfortable or fuel-efficient to use on paved roads, compared with regular tires.
