Car clubs and shows

Along with its historical buildings, residents of the Queen City of the Rockies also love their historic vehicles and the city is home to several fun car shows and clubs:
  • Helena Valley Timing Association is probably the biggest car club in the city and hosts the annual Blast From the Past car show. This show features classic cars and bikes, hot rods, and even a drag race. The show has the aim of raising money for scholarships for students who want to work in automotive careers. Learn more on their official website.

Getting your vehicle ready for winter

As the temperature starts to drop, it's important to make sure your vehicle is ready for winter weather.
  • Battery check: One of the most important things to do is to check your battery. Cold weather can be hard on batteries, and you don't want to get stranded in the snow. If your battery is more than three years old, it's a good idea to have it tested to make sure it's still in good condition.
  • Oil change: You should also check and possibly change your oil. Using synthetic oil helps to increase lubrication and protect your engine in cold weather.
  • Tire change: Don't forget to put on your winter tires! Snow tires and ice tires are specially designed to prevent you from sliding around so much on snowy and icy roads, making them essential for safe winter driving.
By taking these simple steps, you can help ensure that your vehicle is ready for whatever winter throws your way.

What tires do you need for Helena weather?

What tires do you need for Helena weather?
Helena, Montana is known for its cold, icy winters and hot dry summers. The average high in December is 32°F, and the average low is 14°F. January and February are even colder with temperatures staying well below freezing for long periods of time and the record low being -42°F. The city only sees about 37 inches of snow a year, which may not seem much compared to many other cities. However, the extended cold temperatures mean that the snow doesn't melt away until spring. This can make driving conditions very challenging, especially for those who are not used to dealing with icy and snowy roads.

Tires for winter

This means that you’ll almost certainly want to put winter tires on your vehicle to prevent you from slipping and sliding around on that ice. City roads are plowed, so if you live on a street that is well maintained and only need to drive within the city limits you might get away with all-season tires marked M&S for mud and snow. However, if you want to venture any further afield in the long winter months, winter tires should be on your shopping list.

Tires for summer

For the summer season, you can choose between summer tires, all-season tires, and all-terrain tires, depending on whether you like to stay on the paved roads or go off into the wilderness for camping, hiking, and fishing, during the warmer months. All-season tires will be a good all-rounder, allowing you to do some gentle off-road driving, for example on dirt roads. All-terrain tires will cope well with rougher terrain, and summer tires are best suited for sporty driving on paved roads.

Drivers’ Helena guide: practical information
Although Queen City of the Rockies is a great place for hiking enthusiasts the city isn’t the best for walking around, and you’ll need a car to get about. But with our guide to motoring in this beautiful city, you’ll love every moment on the road.

Live traffic report

Traffic jams aren’t much of an issue in Helena, but traffic reports are useful for construction or accident reports, and essential for weather warnings:

Seasonal tire changeover

Helena has enough seasonal variation to make changing your tires almost a necessity - almost everyone in the city does it and lines to change tires at local mechanics can build up when the first snow storms are approaching

Winter

The winter season lasts a long time in the Queen City of the Rockies, so people will often put their snow or ice tires on as early as late September or early October, especially if they regularly need to drive into or through the mountains. Then these tires will probably stay on their vehicles into April or even May.
For people who frequently drive on poorly maintained roads, where the snow and ice build-up, studded or studdable tires might also be a good idea. These tires have metal studs in them that dig into the snow or ice, giving the best traction and improving gas mileage on slippy roads. In Montana, studded cars can be on your car for up to 8 months of the year. Legally you have to remove them from June 1st to September 30th.

Summer

For the summer months, from around April to October, summer tires, all-season tires, or touring tires are popular choices for people who stay on the roads. All-season tires are a versatile choice, allowing you to drive on wet and dry roads, in mud, and even some light snow (as long as they are designed for mud and snow - they’ll have an M+S marking on them). Touring tires are good for lots of highway driving and summer tires are great for sporty drivers.

Driving Laws

Here are some key rules of the road you should know if you’re driving in the Queen City of the Rockies:
  • Young drivers: You can get your learner’s permit at 14 and a half, with your parent's permission, if you’re in a proper state learner driver program.
  • Cellphone use: Unlike the state as a whole, you’re not allowed to use your cell phone while driving within the city limits.v
  • Expanded DUI: A DUI is applicable to drug use as well as alcohol use while driving.
  • Snow routes: The city has emergency snow routes and you must not park on these streets between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on days where more than 2 inches of snow are expected to fall.

Window tint laws

Tinting your vehicle windows is very popular, to cool your car on sunny days, but can cause problems if it’s too dark. So there are laws designed to prevent you from doing so. In the Queen City of the Rockies tint laws come under state jurisdiction and you can read the full regulations on the official Montana Laws website. Here are the key points to note:
  • Windshields may only be tinted above the AS-1 line.
  • Front side windows may only be tinted with a film that allows 24% of light in.
  • Rear and rear side windows may only be tinted with a film that allows 14% of light in.
  • Reflective tints must not be more than 35% reflective and may not be applied to the windshield.
Learn about all the benefits of tinting your vehicle windows and check out all the great options available.

Roads and highways

Even though it’s a pretty spread-out city, there are only two main highways that serve the Queen City of the Rockies.
I-15 goes from north to south through the east side of the city, passing by the airport. To the north, it goes to Great Falls and then on to the Canadian border. And to the south, it passes through Butte before heading off into Idaho and then on to the Mexican border in California.
US 12/US 287 goes east to west through the downtown area, traveling along Euclid Avenue, W Lyndale Avenue, N Montana Avenue, and in parallel on Prospect Avenue and 11th Avenue. The US 12 is also known as the Lewis and Clark Highway in Montana and goes to Washington state in the west and Michigan in the east. The US 287 is a north-south highway that runs along with the US 12 through Helena, until Townsend just east of the city, and to the west, it joins the I-15.

Residents of the Queen City of the Rockies love to go out into the great outdoors - in fact, that’s one of the best things about living in this cute little city. So some sort of off-road tires, that enable you to drive off the paved roads and into the wilderness are a popular choice in Helena.
There are various options for off-road tires, including all-terrain tires, mud-terrain tires, and rugged terrain tires. All-terrain tires offer a good balance for people who like to drive on both paved roads and more rugged surfaces.
Mud-terrain tires are designed for more hardcore off-road experiences, with super chunky treads for going over whatever surface you can find, and thick sidewalls to resist punctures. But they’re not so smooth or comfortable to drive on paved roads.
Finally, rugged terrain tires are designed to give you the benefits of both all-terrain and mud-terrain tires. They can cope with whatever surface you throw at them but will also give a reasonably comfortable ride on paved roads.

FAQ

Where to buy tires in Helena?

The number one choice for buying tires in Helena is United Tires. With a stock of over 60,000 tires, you’ll get a much wider selection than any little store in town. The enormous choice isn’t the only bonus - you’ll also know you’re getting the lowest prices online, saving you up to 50%! When are studded tires legal in Helena?

Here in Helena, studded tires are only legal from October 1st through May 31st. The main reason for this is to protect our roads from damage. The steel studs can chip and wear down the asphalt when the roads are clear of ice and snow. With that said, there are times when studded tires can be really useful. If you’re driving into the mountains and off the main, well-plowed roads, studded tires will give you extra traction and help keep you safe on the iciest of roads road. Just remember to take them off by May 31st, or when the snow and ice have gone, so we can all enjoy smooth, pothole-free roads!

Do I need winter tires in Helena?

If you live in Helena, then you’re strongly advised to use winter tires. You know that the winters can be harsh and between all the snow and ice, driving can be treacherous. That's why it's a good idea to invest in winter tires, which are designed specially to increase traction and stability in cold weather conditions. They also have a deeper tread pattern that helps to clear away snow and ice. As a result, they can make your winter driving much safer. So if you're looking for a way to improve your safety on the roads in the Queen City of the Rockies, consider investing in a set of winter tires.
