Welcome to Vehicle City!

From the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, Flint was the country’s most important manufacturer of carriages and later — automobiles. Flint truly deserved its nickname, “Vehicle City”! Durant-Dort Carriage Company opened here in 1886, and only in four years, the city produced over 100,000 annually! The manufacturers of the essential carriage parts (wheels, body, springs) were also the suppliers of Buick Motor Company, which relocated from Detroit to Flint in 1903. Soon after that, William C. Durant became its director and consolidated all manufacturing forces under one enterprise.

From horse carriages to the General Motors Flint Assembly

This is how the almighty General Motors was born in 1908. Flint became the center of car manufacturing, hosting Chevrolet and Buick divisions. Owning a Chevrolet or a Buick? “Shop by car” on our website, choose your year and model, and buy new or used tires for the best prices! A famous 1936-1937 three-month sit-down strike played an important role in developing industry standards. The United Automobile Workers of America union became the official representative of workers’ rights. In the 1950s, Flint was home to the largest automobile manufacturing plant in the country — GE. It became the second most important automotive city after Detroit.
In the 1980s, the facility closed, and Flint fell into unemployment, crisis, and deindustrialization. But today, it strives and keeps the status of the “Vehicle City”: a famous week-long “Back to the Bricks” classic car show is held here annually.

What tires do you need for Flint weather?
Flint has a humid continental climate. Winters are cold, with temperatures not rising above freezing for around 50 days (on average, between October and May). Summers in Flint are warm to hot. The level of precipitation is moderate and quite evenly distributed throughout the year. But at least 1 inch of snow lays for at least 60 days (November-April). Temperatures vary between 23 °F and 70 °F during a year but rarely fall below 13 °F or rise above 97 °F.

All-year-round tires

These weather conditions demand two sets of tires — winter (or all-season Mud&Snow) and summer that need to be interchanged when temperatures drop/rise steadily above 45 °F.

DRIVERS’ FLINT GUIDE: PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Drivers’ Flint guide: practical information
Drivers’ Flint guide: practical information
Live in Vehicle City just planning a visit? Then this Driving Guide has been created right for you! The United Tires experts gathered all important information on driving rules, car window tint regulations, tips on how to avoid traffic, and much more. Read on and enjoy your Flint ride!

Live traffic report

According to the Data USA website, on average, the residents of Flint spend 26.3 minutes commuting to work (in comparison to 25.8 in Detroit and the national average of 26.9 minutes). Flint traffic can be bad, so always check the real-time online resources before hitting the road. Here are five very reliable ones:

Seasonal tire changeover

Seasonal tire changeovers are a must in Flint. All-season Mud and Snow, winter, or snow tires are a must when temperatures fall below 45 degrees Fahrenheit and the roads become icy and slippery. In Flint, this period can last from late October to April. They are made from softer rubber compounds and have aggressive tread patterns. These tires are safe in winter: they won’t skid or harden on frozen road surfaces, providing you optimal handling and control in snow or slush.
During the warm season, when temperatures stay above 45 degrees Fahrenheit, summer or performance tires suit Flint roads the best. They are made from stiffer rubber compounds that won’t melt on heated road surfaces, providing optimal vehicle control even at high speeds. All-season tires also suit mild summer conditions, which are quite common in Flint.
Customize your search “By season” on our website, make your choice, and submit your order before 12 a.m., and it will be shipped on the same business day. Right to the doorstep of your Flint home or office. Always free of charge by FedEx.

Driving Laws

Answers to FAQs about traffic laws and safety can be found on the official website of the Michigan State Police. But to save you some time, we’ve revised them and selected the most important ones.
  • Buckle up at all times. The Michigan law, though, only officially requires the driver and the front seat passenger to wear a seat belt and children from age 4 through 15 in the back seats. But we recommend all passengers wear seatbelts at all times
  • Transporting open intoxicants (bottles of alcohol) isn’t legally allowed. There are some exceptions (for limos, for example), but on average occasions having an open bottle of alcohol in the car will lead to a fine
  • DUI — driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly against the law. For drivers of 21 years and older, the legal alcohol limit in blood is 0.08%, and for drivers under 21 — 0.02%
  • Texting and speaking on the phone while driving is illegal in Michigan. Drivers under 18 years old aren’t allowed to speak on the phone too, but check out your local municipality rules, which can restrict speaking on the phone to all drivers

Window tint laws

Visit the official Michigan Car Tinting Laws for a full list of tinting regulations in the state. And we revised them and selected the most important rules to avoid a ticket.

Tints darkness for sedans, SUVs, and vans

  • Windshield: only a non-reflective window tint stripe can be installed at the top 4 inches of the windshield
  • Front side windows: only a 4-inch tint stripe (of any darkness) can be installed at the top 4 inches of the window
  • Backside windows: films of any darkness can be applied
  • Rear window: films of any darkness can be applied

Reflective tints application

In Michigan, it is legally allowed to tint car windows with films of not over 35% reflectiveness.
