Did You know

Did you know that?..

Wichita was home to an early automobile manufacture

The Jones Motor Car Company was founded in Wichita, Kansas in 1914 by John J. Jones. The company's most well-known car was the Jones Six, a touring car that could carry 7 people. Production ceased in 1921 when the company went bankrupt, but not before the company built more than 3,000 cars. Today, the Jones Motor Car Company is remembered at the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum with a display of one of the last remaining Jones Six cars.

While not known for its automotive industry or heritage, Wichita is still a major vehicle center and home to several fun automobile events.

The “Air capital” of the world

In the early days of aviation, a handful of cities could lay claim to being the "air capital" of the world. However, Wichita, Kansas soon rose to the top of the pack, thanks to its thriving aviation industry. The city was the birthplace of several major aircraft manufacturers, including Cessna, Beechcraft, and Stearman Aircraft (a division of Boeing). This was in part due to its central location in the country and the flat land around the city. As a result, the city earned the nickname "the Air Capital of the World." Today the Beechcraft and Cessna offices are still based in Cowtown (although now both owned by the same parent company) and the city is still home to several airports and a major air force base.

Car events

Downtown Wichita is home to a couple of more unusual car shows every year.

What tires do you need for Wichita weather?

What tires do you need for Wichita weather?
Cowtown experiences four distinct seasons each year with an average yearly temperature of 58 °F. Summer can get pretty hot, with temperatures sometimes even over 100 °F. The spring and fall seasons are relatively mild, with highs in the 70s and 80s. However, the winters can be quite cold, with lows often dipping below freezing. The city sees around 13 inches of snow each year and can experience temperatures below freezing any time from late October to early April.
What this means for motorists is that winter tires are a good idea in Cowtown. While not essential, especially if you can leave your car at home on the coldest days, they are a good idea for anyone who regularly needs to leave the city streets and main highways, and has to be able to drive even when the weather is bad.
But if you are able to stick to plowed and salted roads and highways all winter you can also select some mud and snow-rated all-season tires, which should enable you to keep driving for most of the Wichita winter. These tires perform reliably in a wide range of conditions, from hot to cold pavement, wet to dry weather, and some light snow and mud. They’re long-lasting and durable so a good investment for the cost-conscious and safety-conscious driver.
Some drivers prefer a performance tire for the summer months and opt to put on summer tires for the hottest part of the year. With their special rubber compound these tires are ideal for sporty drivers as they give excellent grip and traction allowing for faster braking, cornering, and acceleration, in hot, wet, or dry conditions. The trick with these tires is to always switch them out when temperatures start to drop as they’re not made to cope with cold temperatures and can even cause you to skid on icy roads as the rubber hardens up.

DRIVERS’ WICHITA GUIDE: PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Drivers’ Wichita guide: practical information
Drivers’ Wichita guide: practical information
Luckily driving around Cowtown doesn’t involve avoiding cows anymore, but with our guide to motoring in the city, you’ll avoid breaking any rules of the road, and always be sure of finding a parking space. We’ll also give you the lowdown on when to change your tires for winter.

Live traffic report

Seasonal tire changeover

Seasonal tire changeovers are essential in some areas, but Cowtown is not one of them. However, they can be a good idea for some drivers, as the city does see some snow and temperatures can frequently drop below freezing for 3 months of the year.

November to February

From late November to February or even March you’ll regularly experience freezing temperatures and see some snowfall in Wichita. During these months, if you can avoid driving on the coldest days, and rarely need to leave the city streets you don’t need to change out your tires, as long as you have some good quality all-season tires, rated for mud and snow.
However, if you need to use your car at all times or regularly drive onto smaller rural roads then putting on winter tires for these months is strongly advised. They are made with special rubber so that they stick better to icy or snowy roads and have treads that are designed to cope with snow. All this means that they grip the road and keep you safe in winter driving.

March to October

If you have winter tires on your car you’ll probably want to take them off around March time, depending on the weather that particular year. They should be exchanged for either all-season tires, touring tires, or summer tires once temperatures are over 45 °F throughout the whole day. The specific tire you select will depend on your driving preferences. However, touring tires are generally the most popular choice for drivers who like to stay on paved roads and want a quiet and comfortable drive in most road conditions (except for ice and snow).

Driving Laws

Here are some of the main driving ordinances you should be aware of in Cowtown:
  • Overloading:, It’s against the law to drive a vehicle that’s loaded up so that the driver can’t fully see out of the front or sides of the vehicle.
  • Fire engines: Don’t drive less than 500 feet behind a fire engine or park on the same block where the fire engine has stopped in response to a call.
  • Reversing: No reversing unless it’s safe to do so and won’t interfere with other traffic.
  • Sidewalks: No driving on a sidewalk, unless you are accessing a driveway that has access over the sidewalk area.
You can find all these local ordinances on the City’s official Municipal Code website.

Unspoken Road Rules

Traffic in Cowtown may not be bad but it’s still handy to know the locals' tips, tricks, and complaints:
  • Traffic jams: You have to complain about crosstown traffic, even if it only took you 20 minutes to go from one side of the city to the other.
  • Kellog drama: It’s noteworthy to drive along Kellog Avenue without seeing an accident!
  • Merging: Watch out for people stopping at the top of an on-ramp, rather than merging smoothly.
  • What blinkers: Beware that locals will change lanes and even turn without using their blinkers.
  • Polite and friendly: Here’s a nice one - if someone is trying to turn into slow-moving or stationary traffic, let them in. It’s the friendly Cowtown thing to do!

Parking rules

Parking in Cowtown is generally pretty easy but here are some pointers:
  • Street parking is available downtown but most spots have time limits so check signs nearby.
  • Parking lots are available around the city with many offering daily and hourly options. Monthly lots generally only offer the option of monthly parking.
  • Covered lots almost all offer hourly or daily parking options.
  • Metred parking is free outside of the hours of 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, except in the area of Century II and the Library, where parking is only free after 11 p.m.
You can read all about the parking options on the official Downtown Wichita website.

Window tint laws

Tinted vehicle windows are popular to give privacy and keep your vehicle interior cooler in hot weather. But remember to stick to regulations around the safety of window tinting:
  • Windshields can only be tinted above the AS-1 line.
  • All other windows can be tinted as long as at least 35% of light can get in.
  • Reflective tints are not allowed at all.
  • Colored tints can be used, but not yellow, red, or amber.
Find out about the latest trends in the tinting industry, read reviews, get pro tips, and learn about all the tinting options available to you today.

Helmet laws

In Cowtown, the helmet laws are the same as in the rest of the state and are limited laws. The only people required to wear motorcycle helmets are riders or passengers under the age of 18. These helmets must be DOT-approved. But riders of all ages must have eye protection - either shatter-proof helmet visors, glasses, goggles, or face shields.
Read the regulations in full on the Kansas Highway Patrol's official website.

Roads and highways

As you’d expect from a city with a very short commute time, Wichita has a great highway network. Here are some of the main routes through and around the city you should be aware of:
  • I-35, also known as the Monarch Highway, comes from Oklahoma to the south and skirts around the southeast of the city before heading north to El Dorado, Emporia, and then on to Kansas City. It provides access to McConnell Airforce Base and Butler Community College.
  • I-135 runs through the center of the city, starting at the I-35 junction just south of the city and heading pretty much due north to Salina. This highway gives access to the downtown area.
  • I-235 starts at the I-35/I-135 junction to the south of the city and heads northwest, reconnecting with the I-135 to the north of the city, forming half of a loop road. It provides access to the Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, Sedgwick County Zoo, and the city’s western suburbs.
  • US 54/US 400 runs concurrently from east to west through the city center as Kellog Avenue, connecting with all the city’s Interstates. This highway provides access to much of downtown before it goes west to Colorado and east to Missouri.

Scenic drives

Cowtown is located in a great position for plenty of day trips and scenic drives out from the city. The official 360 Wichita website has collected some of the best nature outings, visits to new cities, and a Kansas favorite - stops at unique roadside attractions, all within a few hours of the city.

FAQ

Where to buy tires in Wichita?

The number one choice for both used and new tires in Wichita is United Tires. With the lowest prices available for the highest quality tires you get the best of both worlds. Shipping is always free and all tires are sent with FedEx to your door. With our online warehouse you can save up to 50% off regular prices and you can rest assured that every one of our used tires has been fully quality checked, and only the highest quality tires make it to our website.

What tires are best for Wichita?

With all the SUVs you’ll see on the streets of Cowtown, SUV tires are a great bet for motorists in this compact midwestern city. Locals love to drive out of the city into the countryside and these tires are great for driving both on roads and highways and some gentle off-road driving. They’re also great if you have to haul a lot of gear, as they’re designed for carrying heavy loads - whether that’s all the gear from your kid’s little league team, or camping and fishing equipment for a weekend away. These tires offer a combination of comfortable highway driving and confident handling on less smooth terrain.

Do I need winter tires in Wichita?

Although winter tires are not an essential item in Wichita, they are definitely a good idea. The city sees up to about 12 inches of snow a year and temperatures average at below 45 °F for 4 months of the year. Winter tires will give your car much better traction than regular tires do, and this can be extremely important when driving on icy or snow-covered roads. With regular tires, you run the risk of skidding and losing control of your vehicle; with winter tires, you're much less likely to have this problem. So while you may not need winter tires in Wichita for much of the winter there are enough icy and snowy days for them to be a valuable investment in your family’s safety.
