The center of the American car industry

Chicago is a historical center of the American car industry. It all began with the first 1895 race, which kickstarted car production — and in the first decade of the XIX сentury, a production of 68 models of cars was going by about 30 manufacturers.
Сhicagoans traditionally do a lot of driving, be it for a daily work commute, shopping, or recreation. The celebrity status of some streets, unfortunately, doesn’t help the traffic: the city takes 3rd place in the U.S. after New York and Philadelphia on the density and intensity of the city traffic.

The famous Chicago Assembly — Ford’s first production line

Today the oldest Ford production line — the Chicago Assembly — operates at E. 130th Street and Torrence Ave. It was opened in 1924, producing Model T. Eighty years later, in 2004, the grand $400 million were spent by the company on plant modernization. Nowadays it is churning out new models of Ford Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, and the Ford Police Interceptor Utility. By the way, our catalog has a wide selection of SUV tires, check them out and choose the option that fits your budget.

Chicago Auto Show

The world-famous Chicago Auto Show is an annual event, held at McCormick Place Convention center. It attracts the largest players in the car manufacturing industry, alongside huge crowds of visitors, looking to partake in the latest auto developments.

Legendary streets and routes

Chicago streets, organized in a grid system, along with its double- and triple-decked streets, are characteristic features of the city. СondéNast Traveller names Michigan Avenue (together with Magnificent Mile) one of the world’s most famous streets, along with Broadway, Pacific Coast Highway, La Rambla, Abbey Road, and others.
The legendary Route 66 begins in Chicago: originally, in 1926, the starting point was located on Jackson Boulevard at Michigan Avenue, but since 1933 it has been changed to Jackson Boulevard at Lake Shore Drive.

What tires do you need for Chicago weather?
What tires do you need for Chicago weather?

    Two distinct Chicago seasons

In the Windy City, the summers are warm, humid, and wet; the winters are freezing, snowy, and windy. In order to drive around safely, one needs good tires. The experts do recommend getting two sets of tires for driving in Chicago — summer, or performance, and winter tires. Thinking of getting both? Shop for used tires that allow you to save up to 50% of your tire budget! Shop online on our website, submit your order before 1 p.m., and it will be shipped on the same business day! Being so close to our headquarters, you will get your tires in no time.

    Best-selling all-rounders

Two distinct Chicago seasons do require a seasonal changeover but, according to our sales department, Chicagoans prefer to drive all year round on all-season tires. It is a safe choice unless the winter weather gets really harsh. If the winter temperature steadily drops below 45 °F, it makes sense to change into all-season M+S (mud and snow) or winter tires. The same in summer: when the weather is hot (over 45 °F), consider changing into summer rubber that offers a higher performance on the heated or wet road.
Need assistance with choice? Just dial 773-840-0282 or call toll-free at 1-888-566-6214 to speak with our 24/7 customer service. And it comes in handy that United Tires headquarters, a brand-new 100,000 sq. ft warehouse, and two tire shops are located in Chicago. Being here, you can benefit the most from our super-fast and free delivery by FedEx!
Though seasons in Chicagoland are super distinct, like most Americans, Chicagoans still prefer to drive on all-season tires, the most sought-after category on our site.

Everything you need to know about legal obligations of drivers in Chicago, city’s traffic, roads and road conditions, seasonal tire changeover for safe driving and much more!

    Live traffic report

Chicago is the 3rd worst city for traffic in the U.S. after New York and Philadelphia. Historically, the worst traffic is between 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays. To get an accurate real-time Chicago traffic report, go to:

    Seasonal tire changeover

    Cold season

The cold season lasts from early December to the beginning of March, with an average daily high temperature below 45 °F. When it drops below 45 °F, you need to change your summer or all-season tires for the winter ones. Their softer rubber compound will provide the optimal grip on the icy road surface, and the brutal tread design with deeper grooves will allow you to safely drive in the snow or slush. Usually, the frosts hit Chicago between Thanksgiving and Easter, so it’s easy to remember when to perform a changeover. United Tires has many options of new or used winter tires, starting from less than $50 onwards.

    Tire chains and studded tires

The use of tire chains is legal in Illinois when necessary, to quote the Illinois chain law (625 ILCS 5/12-401) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12-401) Sec. 12-401: “Nothing in this Section shall be deemed to prohibit the use of tire chains of reasonable proportion upon any vehicle when required for safety because of snow, ice, or other conditions tending to cause a vehicle to skid”. Studded tires are prohibited by law in Illinois, as they can significantly damage the road surface and disturb the residents with the noise. A good option if you are heading somewhere with extreme weather conditions is to get studless tires which are a superior type of winter tires, and a solid modern replacement to good old studs.

    Warm-season

April is the traditional month for a warm-season tire changeover. The best tires for it are new or used summer or performance tires, but all-season rubber will do just fine too. Summer tires allow you to get the best performance out of your car during the hot and humid Chicago summer. The safe temperature range for this rubber is above 45 °F.
Remember, if you decide to buy summer tires, you will definitely need to perform a seasonal tire changeover once the winter settles in. Summer tires are made from the hard rubber compound which doesn’t “melt” on the hot road surface, and their deep grooves and a special tread pattern allow perfect aquaplaning in heavy rains. But once the road freezes, the cold temperature stiffens it, turning the tires into skates. It is dangerous to drive on summer or performance tires in winter. And vise-versa: winter or all-season M+S tires are made from a softer rubber compound that will “melt” on the hot road, making driving unsafe.

    Driving Laws

5 things you need to know about the driving laws in Chicago, Il

    1. Usage of hand-held devices whilst driving is illegal in Chicago, but it’s ok to use hands-free if the driver is 19 y.o., or older. See 625 ILCS 5/12-610.2
    2. If passing a work zone on the road, motorists have to reduce speed, change the lane if possible, and yield to workers and authorized drivers. See 625 ILCS 5/11-605.1
    3. Drivers got to yield to pedestrians on crossings, and to school children in the time of school hours. See ILCS 625 Vehicles 5/11-1002
    4. The tolls have to be paid within seven days, online. It’s on the driver to take a note of the mile marker or a toll plaza.
    5. Should a driver hear the siren of an emergency vehicle or see it moving, a motorist has to pull to the right side of the road, or stop the vehicle and allow the EV to pass. No photos or cellphones are allowed within 500 feet from the emergency scene! See 625 ILCS 5/11-907
You can always find out more about state laws about driving in Chicago on the official site of Governors Highway Safety Association.

    Unspoken Road Rules

You’ve got to drive as you mean it and be proactive when exiting or entering a freeway of Chicagoland. Being assertive, with the blinker on, accelerating, and “really going for it”, and tipping your car’s nose into the traffic really helps to join the dynamic and incessant flow of cars on Chicago’s freeways. Being courteous really helps, too. Use the blinkers at all times, but beep little, if at all. Loud and prolonged honking is reserved for imminent danger situations here, so shall you feel you require a beep to get your point across, just keep it a beep.
Chicago is teeming with cyclists, changing the lines, etc., so keep your eyes peeled, Same goes for pedestrians, particularly during school and business hours, be attentive and vigilant, and you should be fine.

    Parking rules

5 things you need to know about Chicago parking rules

Chicago parking can be difficult to find and breaking parking rules results in a ticket. Here are some rules to follow not to get one, ways to save on parking in Chicago, and a Chicago parking tickets guide:
    1. Chicago uses orange paper “No parking” signs during the regular street cleaning. Pay attention to that! Otherwise $60 ticket!
    Parking rules
    1. The Red Anti-Gridlock Zone sign means that you aren’t allowed to park here during peak hours, or get Rush Hour Parking $100 ticket
    2. Car meters accept different payment methods. Check what kind of payment is accepted by a particular parking meter, and whether it allows for an hour or two of free parking. An expired parking meter causes a $50–$70 ticket, and parking outside of metered space is a $50 ticket!
    3. 25 days — the period to pay parking violations before they double in price. And only seven days to contest a parking ticket!
    4. You can pre-book a parking garage. There’s a system of parking garages throughout the city. The smart way is to pre-book your parking garage spot, or street parking spot beforehand, with attractive discounts available if you pay in advance. There are services like Spot Angels, or Spot Hero to secure your parking spot at the lowest cost, and to find free-of-charge City Lot parking spots, too!
You can always find out more about Chicago parking from the official website of the City of Chicago.

    Window tint laws

    Key tinting regulations in Chicago

Enacted in 2009, Illinois tint laws are slightly more complex than in the other states. Window tint darkness, allowed for sedans must not exceed 35% of VLT (visible light transmittance) for all windows but the windshield. For SUVs and “multipurpose vehicles” front side windows should allow 50% of light in, and films of any darkness can be used for rear windows.
Windshield tint is absolutely illegal throughout the states: you can only apply a non-reflective sun visor strip of 6 inches wide, of 70% VLT (visible light transmittance) maximum. Outside of Illinois, the usual width of the visor strip is 4”-5”. Learn more about tinting in Chicago, IL.

    Helmet laws

There are no specific laws regulating the use of helmets, full stop. Yet, there’s an eye protection law (625 ILCS 5/11-1404) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 11-1404) Sec. 11-1404., stating: “The operator of a motorcycle, motor-driven cycle or moped and every passenger thereon shall be protected by glasses, goggles or a transparent shield”.
There have been instances, however, when the judge would consider it to be negligence on behalf of the rider not to wear a helmet for protection
Despite Chicago helmet laws, one thing is true: It costs you time and money to recover from a bike accident, choose safety, and protect yourself by using a helmet.

    Roads and highways

Chicago toll: pay for a convenient ride

There are seven mainline and four auxiliary interstate highways running through Chicago and its suburbs. Watch out for traffic on Kennedy and Dan Ryan Expressways, they are the busiest state-maintained routes in Illinois.
Overall five toll roads pass through Chicago. Need a Chicago toll pay? Register online and get an E-ZPass or I-PASS transponders, pay online, or right on the way — with cash or a credit card. Toll plazas are located along the routes. Keep in mind that some lanes along the tollways are cash-only! Need to check out the specific location? Visit Illinois Tollway virtual map.
Jane Addams Memorial Tollway connects Rockford Area and the Chicago Metro Area, crossing Interstate 39 and Interstate 90. It will conveniently get you from Rockford to O’Hare International Airport, and further North, to Wisconsin.
Illinois Tri-State Tollway crosses I-94, I-294, and I-80 and connects the City of Chicago with Wisconsin, Indiana, and other Illinois destinations.
Chicago Skyway, or, simply, Skyway, is a 7.8-mile-long toll road that crosses I-90 and I-94 and connects the Indiana Toll Road to the Dan Ryan Expressway. Has cash-only lanes! The main feature of the Skyway is the "High Bridge", one of Chicago’s landmarks. It is a 1⁄2-mile-long steel truss bridge, that spans the Calumet River and Calumet Harbor.
Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway is a part of the Chicago-Kanzas City Expressway, Interstate 88. Crosses I-290, I-294.
Veterans Memorial Tollway is a part of Interstate-355, connecting the Western and the Southern Chicago outskirts.

    Street layout

Chicago’s today’s street layout came about in 1909 when the grid system was implemented after 8 years of deliberations by the city council. Two sets of streets run parallel to their own set and perpendicular to another, like in Manhattan in NYC, where avenues run perpendicular to streets.
    Keep in mind that:
    • The center of the grid is at State and Madison
    • Chicago streets run either N-S or E-W
    • There’s a prefix to the street’s name as you can see in Utires’ Chicago shops addresses:
    • 3621 N Harlem Ave, Chicago, 60634, where N stands for North, or 2720 unit B, W Grand Ave Chicago, 60612, where W stands for West.
    • Street numbers go up as you move from the center to the periphery
    • Street signs reference the grid
    • There are diagonals, that can help you to shorten the driving distance
You can always find out more about Chicago parking from the official website of the City of Chicago.

U.S. Routes, starting in Chicago IL

U.S. Route 34 beginning originally was in downtown, running west on Ogden Avenue and through the suburbs, then on to Iowa. In 1970 the starting point got moved west to Harlem Avenue (Illinois Route 43), intersecting with U.S. 66.
U.S. Route 66 was a United States Numbered Highway in Illinois, linking St.Louis MO and Chicago IL. The historic Route 66, the Main Street of America, connected Chicago to Southern California, with Chicago terminus at Jackson Boulevard and Michigan Avenue. Parts of the road are still in use and carry traffic.

    Downtown’s double-decked streets

Downtown Chicago has a few double-decked and triple-decked streets. Wacker Drive is the longest, and the most famous of them. It’s got a riverfront boulevard on the top level, and a roadway for commercial and through traffic on the lower level, with a recreational walkway along with the water level. Peppered with some of the best bars and restaurants, and home to some of the best shopping locations, it’s a must-visit place in Chicago.

    Scenic drives

    Lake Shore Drive

This expressway, which runs by Lake Michigan, offers spectacular views of Chicago’s skyline, many institutions of note, and the wast water expanse. It runs from Edgewater to Jackson park, along Chicago’s easternmost border.

    Columbus Drive

Columbus Drive takes you through the green of historical Millenium Park and Grant Park, running by sightseeing landmarks, like BP Pedestrian Bridge, and then offers you a direct view of Buckingham Fountain and the gardens around it, before it finally merges onto Lake Shore Drive.

    Logan Square

The boulevards of Logan Square, which actually encompass parts of Logan Boulevard, Humboldt Boulevard, and Kendzie Avenue, offer you historical architectural sights of the Victorian Era, and very characteristic Prairie School style buildings.

    Lower Wacker Drive

This is not particularly aesthetically pleasing to some, yet very Chicagoan marvel of road engineering, worth visiting. It runs directly below Wacker Drive downtown, but still above what is known as Lower Lower Wacker Drive.

    Wells Street Bridge

A double-decked, out-of-postcard bridge over the Chicago River, connecting the Loop to River North is a sightseeing magnet for local Chicagoans and visitors of the Windy City. With CTA’s Brown and Purple lines tracks on its upper deck, it houses automotive traffic on the lower. Cruise into the Loop, admiring the impressive city’s skyline.
