Automotive Fort Collins at a glance

Automotive Fort Collins at a glance
Fort Collins is so picturesque that Harper Goff, a Hollywood art director who was friends with Walt Disney, used the city’s downtown as an inspiration to create the main square of Disneyland’s Main Street USA! Indeed, this beautiful place has a lot to offer to both residents and visitors alike. Being a craft beer capital of the USA, it has a great food scene and the possibilities for outdoor adventures are truly countless.
The automotive side of things is mostly represented by roads in perfect condition, good old auto repair shops, one drive-in cinema, and a few big and small tire shops. There is no major car or tire production in town. But history bears a few good memories.

The historic Fort Collins trolley

The first (and only) streetcar system was established in Fort Collins in 1907 by the Denver and Interurban (D&I) Railroad. The lines of the three-legged trolley were taking off from the Mountain and College intersection and went west on Mountain Avenue, south on Pitkin, and northeast on Linden, up to Lindenmeier Lake. Three cars operated daily from 5 a.m. through midnight. In 1918, however, due to economical reasons, D&I stopped operating The Fort Collins system without warning.
The city was trying to replace the trolley with a gasoline-powered bus, but with little success. And in 1919 asked its citizens to purchase the system for $100,000 to revitalize it. The vote resulted in a whopping 8:1 in favor of the proposal, the city acquired the trolley system and started to upgrade it. The original cars were replaced with new, single-truck Birney Safety ones. You can still find them on the streets of the country! And The Birney Car 21 still cruises the Fort Collins streets on weekends and holidays through spring and summer!

What tires do you need for Fort Collins weather?

What tires do you need for Fort Collins weather?
Summers in Fort Collins are warm and sunny, and winters are cold, windy, and snowy with the weather conditions verging on the point of extreme.
For driving in summer, the residents of Change City choose all-season tires. It is indeed a safe choice, suitable for the local road conditions. However, when the late autumn or winter temperatures steadily drop under 45 Fahrenheit, it is time for a seasonal changeover. Here in Fort Collins, you absolutely cannot drive all year round on all season tires. Besides being unsafe, it is also illegal.
For driving in winter, the residents and the visitors of this Colorado town will be required to mount winter, studless, or studdable tires. These tires are manufactured from a softer rubber compound that provides the optimal grip with the slushy, icy, cold road surface, and feature an “aggressive” tread pattern that helps the vehicle cruise through snow and prevents aquaplaning in slush. Fort Collins is a place where the Colorado Traction Law comes to action during severe winter conditions, and if you don’t own a four-wheel drive or tires listed above, you must keep chains in your trunk.

Live traffic report

Fort Collins is not famous for its traffic jams, however, if you visit the local forums, you will definitely find complaints about how bad it has become in recent years. Not to be subjective, we just offer you to check out the traffic condition from these few trustworthy resources and try to avoid the usual rush hours:

Seasonal tire changeover

Tires for winter

In Fort Collins the seasonal tire changeover is required by law. During harsh winter conditions the Colorado Passenger Vehicle Traction and Chain Law is in action, and each motorist must comply with either of these 5 requirements:
  1. 4WD or AWD vehicle equipped with tires of 3/16” tread depth the least
  2. All-season Mud & Snow tires (M+S icon on a tire’s sidewall) of 3/16” tread depth the least
  3. Winter tires (mountain-snowflake icon on a tire’s sidewall) of 3/16” tread depth the least
  4. “All-weather” rated by the manufacturer tires of 3/16” of tread depth the least
  5. Snow chains or an approved traction device
All drivers, violating these Colorado Traction Law requirements, will face fines from $130 to $650.

Tires for summer

Fort Collins roads do not require specialized summer tires and most residents use all season rubber when it’s warm outside. But if you want a better grip or a higher speed, buying summer or performance tires will make total sense! Choose them from our extensive selection of new and used tires! Remember that you absolutely cannot drive on these tires when the temperature drops below 45 Fahrenheit, and do not forget to perform a seasonal changeover into all-season M+S, or winter tires.

Driving Laws

  1. Stop behind the stop line at all times
  2. When turning from the one-way street, a driver can make a left turn at a red light
  3. A car, traveling down the narrow mountain road, always yields to the car, traveling up the road
  4. All drivers under 18 years of age are forbidden from cell phone use while driving
  5. During a merge on a highway, the oncoming vehicles always have the right of the way
