INTERNAL PATCH TIRE - CHICAGO, IL

I   t seems like it should be so simple.

Your tire springs a leak. Something small has created a tiny hole that you need to patch up. All you have to do is find the source of the problem and apply a tire patch.
Unfortunately, that’s not the case. It’s usually not enough to patch the tire from the outside. Patching a tire from the inside creates a stronger solution, but it also needs the professional touch.
That’s where the technicians at United Tires can help. We can get your inner tire patch installed in no time, so you can get back on the road with confidence.

The Service

You may be wondering what goes into patching a tire from the inside.
Here’s the process that our technicians follow with all of our customers.
Find the Source of the Leak: We’ll inflate your tire and inspect every inch of it. We’re listening for any hissing sounds, as well as keeping an eye out for visual signs of damage. Your technician may also feel around the tire to see if they can feel air seeping out.
Tire Removal: This is the tricky bit that most people don’t want to handle themselves. To install an internal tire patch, we must first remove the tire. This is an involved process that requires the following steps:

    • Loosening of the lug nuts
    • Jacking up the car
    • Removal of the lug nuts
    • Removal of the wheel from the hub
    • Extraction of any objects embedded in the tire
    • Valve stem core removal
    • Removal of the wheel rim from the tire

Applying the Patch: With the tire removed, we can apply the patch to its inner side. Our technicians secure the patch to the relevant position and thread the patch’s tail through the puncture. This creates a plug that prevents air from seeping out.
Refitting the Tire: Once the inner tire patch is in place, all that’s left is to refit the tire back onto the vehicle.
As you can see, patching a tire from the inside involves much more than taking a tire patch and gluing it over a puncture. We have to remove the entire tire safely, ensuring no further damage occurs.

The Benefits

So, why install an internal tire patch instead of a regular plug?

There are several reasons, including the following:

    • Internal tire patches are protected from the constant friction that driving inflicts on your tires. Because they’re placed on the inner tire wall, they maintain their strength and last longer.
    • An inner tire patch is unlikely to detach from the tire while you’re driving. You can’t say the same for plugs, which could pop out of the puncture when you’re driving on rough terrain.
    • They’re one of the strongest forms of tire repair. The next step up is replacing the tire completely.

That’s everything that you need to know about patching a tire from the inside. If you have any questions, or your tire has recently sprung a leak, get in touch with the team at United Tires today.
