No matter how powerful your engine or highly-responsive your transmission is, your car will be useless if your steering system is failing on you. A defective steering system can compromise your safety and navigating your vehicle more difficult than ever. In other words, you car’s steering system is just as important as your engine, transmission, or any of your car parts for that matter.
Your steering system is mainly responsible for controlling your vehicle to go left, right, straight or in reverse. Regardless of which direction you want to go, it is important that your steering system is in overall good condition to avoid accidents on the road.
So, what are the parts of front wheel driving steering components? Basically, your front wheel driving steering components are composed of 3 or 4 primary components, including the following:
1. Steering wheel
It is one of the first components you see inside a vehicle. The steering wheel is what the driver holds to navigate and control the entire vehicle while driving. Steering wheels before were very large in diameter and thinner than what are usually made nowadays. At present, steering wheels are made with paddings – some even made with grooves -- that provide comfort while holding it in long periods of time.
The size of the steering wheel can also affect the force needed to navigate the car. For example, the larger the steering wheel’s diameter, the lesser the effort the driver needs to turn it, and vice versa.
Many steering wheels nowadays also include horn switch and air bag system, and even audio and music controls.
2. Steering shaft and column
These two connect the steering wheel to the rest of the steering system. The steering shaft also contains a coupler that helps absorb vibrations and allow variation in the alignment between the steering gear and the shaft.
The steering shaft and column can be compared to a syringe – the steering shaft is like the syringe’s plunger, while the column is like the syringe’s barrel. Nowadays, many steering columns are adjustable for more driving comfort.
3. Tie rods
The steering system’s tie rod transmits the force coming from the steering gear, to the steering knuckle. The power transferred to the steering knuckle is mainly responsible for making the car wheel turn to its intended destination.
4. Steering arms
The steering arms and the vehicle’s ball sockets help transmit motion to the steering knuckles from the steering gear. The steering arms are made to efficiently turn the vehicle without the tires hitting the wheel or any steering mechanism.
In summary, the front wheel driving steering components work through the following process.
When you turn the steering wheel, it will also turn the steering shaft inside the steering column. In return, the movement of the steering shaft will turn the steering gear, which will transmit the motion to the steering arms and the steering knuckles via the tie rod. The steering knuckle will then enable to turn the car wheels into its intended destination.
