Have your Ducati Gt1000 steering head serviced by a reliable service center.
Whether you belong to a club of motorcycle riders or use a motorcycle for your day-to- day activities, it is always best to have all the parts in good condition. The most obvious factor that affects the performance of a motorcycle is its tires. Aside from this, there are other components that affect the handling and steering of the motorcycle. This includes the bearings within the motorcycle’s steering head. While this is just a small part of the bike, ignoring this could put your life at risk.
If you are too busy to check on these details on your motorcycle, you can have it checked and maintained by a reputable repair service company. Auto Tires offers various products and services for your motorcycles and vehicles. This includes Ducati GT1000 steering head service among others.
What is a Steering Head Bearing?
When a motorcycle is assembled, its steering head bearings are covered with fresh grease. There are four types of steering head bearings that are widely used today. While there are several exceptions, motorcycles built before 1979 have loose ball-type bearings. The bikes that were assembled after 1979 use either sealed ball-type, caged ball-type, or tapered roller. While the sealed type does not require lubrication, all others need to be greased to properly serve its purpose.
The grease acts as a cushion between the races and the bearing rollers. It also acts as a lubricant and prevents the parts from getting damaged due to corrosion. Overtime and because of frequent high pressure or hot water washings, the grease either dries up or is washed out. When the grease is gone, the bearing rollers stop rotating and start skidding. This eventually dents the bearing causing notchy steering and foul handling.
How Do I Know When I Need To Have My Steering Head Bearing Serviced?
Technically, the user’s manual requires owners to check on the steering head bearings every year. You can manually check the states of the bearing with a few external checks. Jack the motorcycle up until the front wheels clears the pavement. After that, slowly rotate the fork from side to side. Normally, it should turn smoothly and easily. If the forks bind, or if you feel that there are notches in any position or dents, it is safe to say that the bearings have become dented and needs replacement.
What Happens When I Have My Steering Head Serviced?
If you decide to have your steering head bearing serviced, choose a trusted company to do this. The process involves a full steering head service removing, inspecting, cleaning and repacking the bearings. An experienced mechanic can do the job anywhere from two to eight hours depending on the type of bike and the availability of facilities.
