Buying a used tire is a great option especially for single replacement. There are many stores that offer used tires for sale. In fact, secondhand tires are considered a huge business in some countries.
Like any other budget-conscious car enthusiasts and motorists, considering previously-owned tires is a cheaper option is the way to go. However, the problem with used tires for sale is that most of them do not comply with legal standards, while some sell these tires mainly for profit, without considering the public’s safety.
However, it takes a lot of meticulous series of physical inspection as well as common sense before spending money on used tires (or any car parts for that matter). After all, you would prefer to buy something that will be useful in the long run, right?
So, how can you be sure that buying used tires are worth your money without compromising your safety on the road? Here are some tips:
1. Determine the used tire’s actual “age”. Usually, tires have date stamps on them, which contain four digits that indicate the week and year of production. For example, if you see 1109 embossed on the tire, it means 11th week of 2009. Thus, you should avoid buying secondhand tires that are more than five years old as it can be prone to premature deterioration.
2. Check the tire for any cracks, dry rot (premature deterioration), or discoloration. Try pinching the tire about three inches of both sidewalls. If you see any defects mentioned earlier, don’t buy it. Likewise, check whether the tire is repaired by looking on the tire’s insides for plugs or patches.
3. Check for uneven tread wear. Generally speaking, you should avoid any tire with uneven tread wear. You can determine this by checking on the tire’s inner edges. While the outer edge may look okay, it may not be the same for the inner edges. This means the tires may have a shorter life and will continue to wear unevenly.
4. Use your negotiating skills. Better yet, check the tires yourself to assess whether the used tires for sale are worth the price. Let the seller know if you have noticed any defects based on the above tips, then set a negotiation before handing the money to purchase that tire.
Remember, United Tires only offer the best-quality used tires around that are worth the price.
