Parts of a Vehicle’s Cooling System

All vehicles have a radiator, which is basically the heart of your car’s cooling system. It is the major part of the car’s cooling system which helps regulate the right temperature for your vehicle so it can properly run. Too much heat and it can greatly damage your engine. Aside from vehicles, radiators are also used in buildings and electronics with a similar purpose as a car’s radiator.

Signs That It’s Time for a Radiator Change

The car radiator is also one of the most replaced parts in a car. With that being said, it is important to know when a radiator needs to be replaced. Here are some telltale signs that your radiator needs a change:

  • Appearance of steam from under the car hood
  • Sudden spike of the car’s temperature gauge
  • Presence of rust on the radiator’s exterior
  • Presence of a brown substance inside the coolant tank

How to Replace A Damaged Radiator

Before checking your radiator, make sure that your car engine is cool to prevent accidental burns due to heat.

1. Check first the car engine low radiator hose and the car engine upper radiator hose. Check whether both of the hose are either hard or brittle, or soft and weak, as well as signs of cracks and swelling especially on the underside of the hose. If you notice all of these in your hose, then both need to be replaced ASAP.

2. Next, drain the coolant from the cooling system, and then remove the damaged hoses. Avoid forceful removal of the hoses, or it can damage the radiator. Instead, cut the hose to remove it easier.

3. Replace the old hoses with new ones, and should be the correct length, diameter, or curve. Refit the new hoses that go from radiator to engine, and then tightly seal them with clamps.

4. Using a funnel, refill the cooling system and test the engine to check for any hose leakages.
