A vehicle should undergo regular maintenance checks to ensure its longevity and maximum performance every time. For one, a car’s engine is inspected for any leaks or odd sounds that can signify a potential problem which can affect its functionality. Likewise, a car owner should know the different fluids of a car.
There are different types of car fluids, each with its respective function and purpose. Whether you have an SUV, sedan, truck, or any car brand and model you have, car fluids are crucial for the vehicle’s performance on the road. Car fluids are important because it helps a vehicle to run efficiently and perform to its best ability.
With these, here are the basic fluids of a car you should know by heart, their individual functions, and tips on how to check them:
1. Engine Oil
This type of car fluid helps keep the moving parts of the car well-lubricated. In addition, it also helps transfer heat away from the engine, absorb particles, and protect the engine from premature wearing.
Auto experts recommend changing your engine oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, or depending on how frequent you drive, what type of oil you use, or what your owner’s manual specifies.
To check on your engine oil, find the dipstick and clean it first using a rag or a clean cloth. Then, dip back the stick into the oil tube to check whether your engine oil is within normal level (should be near maximum level). If not, add more oil. However, if the engine oil smells burnt or has a darker color than usual, have it changed by experienced personnel.
2. Coolant / Antifreeze
This type of car fluid helps regulate your engine parts’ temperature. By doing so, it will also help prevent serious damage that can result to costly repairs.
According to experts, coolant change / flushing should be done every 24,000 miles or every two years, whichever comes first.
To check on your coolant / antifreeze, remove the radiator cap. Before doing this, make sure that your car is not running. If you see that the coolant level is below the line, it means you have to add more coolant. However, make sure that it’s the same type of coolant you are currently using and is compatible with your vehicle.
3. Brake Fluid
This type of car fluid helps make your vehicle slow down more easily. However, the fluid can accumulate moisture and other particles which can result to corrosion and inefficiency.
While most experts recommend having your brake fluid checked every 30,000 miles, it will still depend on your owner’s manual because every vehicle varies.
You can check the fluid reservoir located on the driver side of the car, and should be at the right levels. If not, add more.
4. Transmission Fluid
This type of car fluid helps in the overall transmission function, including protection from wear-and-tear, corrosion, and gasket conditioning.
Again, a change in transmission fluid may depend on your owner’s manual because every vehicle is different from each other. If you notice that the fluid is darker and smells burnt, you may bring it to a mechanic immediately.
